PS3 Game Recommends

I just picked up a PS3. I hadn't given up hope the Wii could be my sole gaming console until just a week or two ago, but after being disappointed with No More Heroes 2--and reading Edge's comment that "The original title won fans for its shocks and surprises; the second takes no risks. While its ultraviolence is slick and satisfying, its schtick has calcified. Bayonetta has raised the bar for ridiculous action and jaw-dropping style, making No More Heroes the safe and timid alternative" something clicked, and I finally decided I needed one of the HD consoles. The PS3 got my vote because of LittleBigPlanet, God of War, Heavy Rain, and the upcoming Shadow of the Colossus/Ico remake.

So far, I've picked up Metal Gear Solid 4, Soul Calibur IV, BioShock, and Civilization: Revolution. Metal Gear Solid 4 I disliked. Soul Calibur IV seems like a passable sequel, though I played II so much I doubt it will be very revelatory. Civilization: Revolution was great--I've never played the Civ series, though I loved Pirates!--and I've yet to try BioShock.

But my question is this: what games should I pick up? I've formulated a list of ones I want, but there are still others--Mirror's Edge, inFamous--I don't know a whole lot about. Here's the list:

I generally like games that are creative. Too many cutscenes grates on me, as do games with a lack of dramatic downtime or player freedom, and I rarely play online multiplayer. A comfortable difficulty curve is preferential, as is design that isn't totally complex and overwrought. I also tend to be turned off by games that rehash the same old settings--a Middle Eastern warzone or a space station--whether fairly or not. Some recommendations regarding games that two players can play contemporaneously--think RE5, SCIV, Borderlands--on the same console would be good, too.

Fallout 3/New Vegas Preferably 3*
Free roam, sandbox, 1st and 3rd person shooter wide variety of options and alternative endings with great graphics. All you could want in a game Unfortunately only one player though so no split screen :/

You can't go wrong with the two Ratchet and Clank games, "Tools of Destruction" and "A Crack in Time". Platforming fun at it's best!

Batman is supposed to be very good, The Orange box is great value (5 games in one, you know the score) and Little Big Planet 2... well in the words of Susan Ardnt "every happy adjective you know applies to Little Big Planet 2"

(2nd time today) Obligatory Demon's Souls recommendation. While the game does have multiplayer (in a sense) it isn't intrusive but rather is melded into the game world, you see other players as passing ghosts, messages from other players and bloodstains on the ground can help give clues to what may lay beyond the next corner, after obtaining the right items the player can invite others into your world for co-op or PvP, while some others can invade your world trying to stop your progress(only after you reach a certain level and only when your character isn't in soul form).

Also the game is only as difficult as you make it, the enemies all have recognizable attack patterns and movements and planning around them is apart of gameplay; and with ability to influence whether the selected world becomes more dark or light affects difficulty as well, darker worlds offer tougher enemies but greater rewards from enemy drops, while lighter worlds offer weaker enemies and fewer rewards or rewards of lesser quality from enemy drops.

If you find the idea of a first person platformer intriguing, then Mirror's Edge is a must buy, especially given how cheap it is. Watch some videos of it, if you think it's awesome based on vids, you'll enjoy it despite its flaws.

inFamous - is a sandbox game, if you've played GTAIII and enjoyed just running around causing mayhem, you might like it.

Heavy Rain

It's a game that gets praise because it tried something different and new, not necessarily because it was good. Plus, I think a lot of people enjoy it because Madison Paige gets naked. Not that it's bad, but given free porn, why spend even $30 on a game for that?

Bayonetta

Excellent, over the top action. Most of the stuff you see in cutscenes you can do yourself, so it's pretty empowering, as opposed to DMC4 which just makes you sit back and watch.

Read Dead Redemption

Sandbox western, if you like sandboxes, and like westerns, you'll probably like RDR.

LittleBigPlanet 2

The main appeal is creating your own levels, it seems to appeal to the creative types more than others.

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift

Motorstorm games are fun, but personally I'd wait for Motorstorm Apocalypse

Batman: Arkham Asylum

If you've got a decent ISP, check it out on OnLive with their free trial. The experience speaks for itself better, but it's an excellent game overall.

God of War 3

How do you feel about QTEs and unlikable protagonists? It gets a lot of hype, but I'm not sure it's deserved, and would choose Bayonetta between the two of them.

Orange Box

Shit on the PS3, don't get it.

Resident Evil 5

Get the gold edition so you have a good game to use the PS Move with. It's not all that much of a survival horror, so becomes more of a third person action game.

Time Crisis 4

Ehh, I don't think I'd really go for a rail shooter. Only good thing about it is it has co-op mode and would actually work for playing with friends. So depending on whether you are thinking about gaming for yourself or with friends it's either a really bad or really good pick.

Borderlands (maybe; I've played a fair bit already)

It's a fun game, but I'd choose the PC version over the PS3 version. That said, it also has some co-op appeal.

Oblivion (maybe)

Skip it, Skyrim will be out by the time you're through with the other games and should fix some of the major issues Oblivion had.

Heavy Rain is probably out. Bayonetta has some constraints as it's quite linear, but I haven't felt like I have a lack of freedom. The cutscenes are mostly for dialogue.

Thanks very much! I will skip Oblivion in favour of Skyrim, and go for Bayonetta prior to God of War 3.

Also--I love rail shooters (the Wii has placated me so far--HOTD: Overkill, S&P, and DS: Extraction are all great), so TC4 I would be into regardless. Also, MotorStorm is only $12.99, and I get a staff discount--so I'll probably grab it, unless you think there's a better frenetic racer on the PS3 that supports split-screen.

I loved RE4, so RE5 shouldn't be a tough choice. The cutscenes in Heavy Rain may irritate me, but I'll have to see--I have it out on rental. Also, would you still not recommend picking up Orange Box even if I lack a gaming PC or an Xbox 360? I own Half-Life 2 on Xbox, but have never played TFC2, Portal, etc.

Given it's cheap, then sure, Motorstorm Pacific Rift seems like a good buy. Fatal Inertia EX or WipEout HD might work instead of Motorstorm, but any of them should be good.

I'd still skip on the Orange Box. Portal 2 is going to have better support Portal 1 did. TF2, you'd be playing an old, buggy version either with other PS3 owners who probably don't want to play it anymore, or against PC players who have the latest updates (I'm not sure if it includes cross platform play). I'm waiting for a steam sale on TF2 to get it, but I wouldn't touch it on any other platform. Better off to just wait for Valve to do TF3 on the PS3.

At $13, Pacific Rift looks good actually.

I still wouldn't get The Orange Box on PS3. It's just poorly supported and won't be a very good experience. Wait for Portal 2 to come out, and Team Fortress 3 eventually.
