PS3 Games for the Holidays?

Hey all.

I want to get your opinion on what 2 PS3 games would be most enjoyable for my 16-year-old little brother. He says that he wants Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but I have my doubts as to whether or not it would last him very long.

I would normally just make the decision myself, but because he is something of a gaming elitist bastard (as in, he's just about as critical of them as Yahtzee Croshaw) I thought I'd enlist some help this year.

To make matters worse, he has a gaming PC, and told me that he's already played FarCry 2, Fallout 3 (he and I both loved it), and Call of Duty 5...

Any help is MUCH appreciated.

I wouldn't recommend the new Mortal Kombat. It's not really good.

How about Prince of Persia and maybe Guitar Hero: World Tour?

Is his sixteen year old brother even allowed to play Resistance 2? Here it's rated 18+.

He could try Resistance 2 or Motorstorm: Pacific Rift. MK vs DC is a good idea in theory but you seem to have already realised that it will probably be terrible. I urge you to advise against it.

It's funny that someone just made a thread called "PS3 games for the holidays?" I was just thinking to myself "PS3 games in general?"

A PS3, oh dear.

Well the only good PS3 exclusive I can think of is Little Big Planet.

Top PS3 games of all time according to Gamespot.
He didn't say it had to be exclusive. In fact, his example isn't an exclusive. Why pick a fight?

On topic, did your brother _buy_ FarCry 2, Fallout 3 or CoD for the PC? If not, then get him legal and buy one of those in the PS3 version. ;)

If he did buy those, then I'd suggest EndWar as the most interesting innovation to the RTS in a good while. The voice commands are indeed that good. If he has any affinity for anime, strategy, and good plots, Valkyria Chronicles is a must have title.

You can always tease him with a fully paid pre-order of Killzone 2, but that's a pretty mean thing for an older bro to do, IMO. Best of luck in your decisions, and remember, gift returns and exchanges are pretty much idiot simple these days.

The crucial failing here is "according to Gamespot".
The "of all time" part isn't really saying much either considering how long the PS3 has been available. Anyway, I haven't played it but I've heard a lot of good things about LBP. That should probably be another the OP considers.

If he wants "Mortal Kombat", he is not much of an elitist. So go with the Prince of Persia.

Seeing as he said he'd played fallout 3 (also rated 18+ here) im guessing so.

Ratings are a joke to be completely frank I work in a major computer game chain and company policy states that while we cannot sell to the minor if their parent offers to buy it for them we have to let them. Stupid thing is we cant take the money from the minors hand the parent or guardian has to take the money from the minor and pass it to us; its not like buying alcohol where its illegal for to buy for minors.

As for a game? I would suggest any of the following resistance 2, little big planet, prince of persia, ninja gaiden off the top of my head.

I dont know, I guess it depends on his family. But he did play far cry, which I know for a fact is not a kids game.

Heres a better one - "The top Ps3 exclusives of the year, according to IGN". Of course, the other failing is that its solely exclusives.

You know, I really just don't get him sometimes. He loves Fallout 3, yet hates Oblivion, and he's mastered Mortal Kombat II (it came on a collection of old arcade games for the PS2) but every time I try to get him to play Street Fighter II with me, he says it sucks.

Also, I would get him MGS4 if he hadn't already stayed up all night with me playing it and saw all the cutscenes.

After looking at all your suggestions, I'm getting increasingly interested in Valkyria Chronicles. What is it that makes it so good? Is it reminiscent of other JRPGs (turn-based combat and random encounters)?

And what about Dead Space? To me, it just looks like a Resident Evil 4/Gears of War clone. Are there things that make it worth playing?

Thanks a lot for your help, guys.

Has he played other Mortal Kombat games besides MK2? Because everything goes downhill from there.

About Valkyria Chronicles, it´s semi real time tactical RPG. Like a cross between Front Mission and Parasite Eve 2.

If you want a cheap bargain bin game, Uncharted: Drake's fortune is a nice average game to keep yourself occupied.

Resistance 2 is a good choice if he is allowed to play those games. Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm is actually pretty good I was surprised that it wasn't a pile of crap.
