Ok escapist google has failed me 3 times with this subject and I now turn to you all

Now my problem is that I want to connect my PS3 to the internet but my University's router wont let me. I have a Macbook and I know I can hook it up through that via an ethernet cable.

How can I do this?
Any and all suggestions would be most appreciated.

When I was hooking up my 360 in my dorm, I had to go to our schools site and register the MAC address. Maybe yours works similarly.

Well wasnt around for the previous thread so I dont know what you have and have not yet tried, but have you tried configuring it for a wired port?

Honestly, it seems likely that what your facing is proxy limitations set by your school.

2 things
1. There was a previous thread?
2. can you explain how to do this I really hate Macs and suck at doing anything with them

ya I do because I promised my friend we would play Portal 2 ASAP
and thanks for the bump
You could always try to get one of those phones that act as a router. Sure it won't help tonight, but it could be a good future investment. Truth be told, I'm not even sure if that would work, but it's worth looking into.
Thats the thing I'm only here for 4 more weeks
its not really a "good" investment on my end

Sorry, misread on the prior thread.

I could likely get it set up if I was physically there, but DC is like 7 hours away. I find it a little harder troubleshooting vicariously.

Anyway, not sure what depth of difficulty your having yet.

Couple of different ways of approaching this. Yes I would try connecting it via a wired connection if your able to connect your mac via a wired connection.

Plug it in, and run the network config wizard under network settings > Internet connection settings > wired configuration and then walk through the rest filling in the blanks as needed.

Now if its an issue thats a little more complex like say a limitation by the school, its possible to route via your computer and have it act as a network switch and then reroute through to a wired connection. From the schools PoV it looks as if your connected to a computer, but it masks where that connection goes from there. Honestly thats a little too complex for me to try to explain, but It can be done. (downside to having my computer knowledge learned from trial and error as opposed to proper training.)

EDIT: Yeah didnt realize you were looking for a short term type solution. the latter suggestion is something that would likely take a couple hours to configure and get functional. So likely doesnt meet what your trying to accomplish.

EDIT 2: In case you would like to give that a go here is a guide to use one PC as a switch.
http://www.labnol.org/software/connect-computers-without-router/11049/
Not sure how well this would go via a PS3, but its the best thing I can suggest without having to buy something to do it, or talking with the schools IT dept to get it configured (cause I figure they prolly arent available at this hour) PS: this guide is for 2 PCs, but it should get you the rough info you need for a mac as most things like this you can do via a PC you can do via a mac in a similar way.

Ya 4 more weeks here and not neccesarily a "good" investment
Okay, my last idea for you.

This one should work.

Find an internet caffe. What? you don't know of any? That's fine. I am nearly certain McDonalds give free wifi, and are open late.

Okay, that's all I got. Happy hunting.
ya..... inner city DC here
no such thing as "free" anything

Not too sure if that would work with Mcdonalds. They have their own proxy that requires you to agree to a ToS screen before it will connect. If you cannot access that page first (which the PS3 browser wont auto redirect) to accept ToS, I dont think it will work.

Call up your buddy, and make him get himself over to your place. The game works on split screen right?

Unless they live far away... then my idea is once again invalid. Sigh.

I'm tryin damn it!! lol

I got it. I have done the same thing. When the internet is being shared though a iMac or a Macbook the Gateway for the thing being shared to is ALWAYS 10.0.2.1
So set your PS3 IP Address as 10.0.2.2 and the DNS and Gateway as 10.0.2.1
If you connect more then 1 item to the iMac/Macbook for internet use 10.0.2.3 for the second Items IP Address, 10.0.2.4 for the third and keep going in that order. Make sure 10.0.2.1 is the Gateway/DNS for all items.

Now the iMac/Macbook. Go under system Preferences, then under Internet and Wireless go to Sharing
Check Internet sharing and share the internet FROM Airport to computers using Ethernet.

This will fix it for you.
If this does not work add My Skype and I will give you a step by step instructions.

Shit forgot something.
The Subnet mask must be 255.255.255.0 This tells the PS3 that if 10.0.2.2 is unavalible thatit can change the last number till it works, but the 255's mean that the 10.0.2 cannot be changed.
THIS IS A MUST!!!
NOW it will work.
