So the last 2 weeks my ps3(60gb) has been fucking up on me by not reading blu-rays. First i had to keep ejecting the disk till it read the disk, yesterday it stopped reading blu-rays altogether but still plays ps2 and dvds. So i called sony up, told them and they said i should format my hard-drive and this should fix it, i cant format the Hard-drive yet cos i have no place to back up all my save data yet, but i have read online that this has worked, just want to know if this has worked for anyone here?

also if the blu-ray laser is gone, has anyone got it replaced by sony and how much did it cost and how long did it take to get back? Cheers!!!

Well, doing what the company that created the product tells you to do is a generally pretty good rule of thumb

Worked for me anyway, just get a decent external hardrive and make sure its the right format before you try backing up.

Could anyone help me make the Bluray movies I puit into my PS3 look Bluray?
woo-hoo i was waiting for someone like you to post something as stupid as this. Considering the ps3 bluray player is possibly the best player on the market still today. Gonna be pretty hard to find a stand alone player with the processing power to load super fast, high speed ethernet for bluray live streams, and constant software upgrades. Not to mention the overall picture quality is still top notch compared to other new models out there. Not to mention you know...it's also plays games :)

However if this was a legitamate question, (which I doubt)..then you need a HDMI cable and a HDTV capable of 1080p resolution. :) and i apologize.

The fuck...? Geez...
And I have an HDMI cable and a wide screen tv, it's just not supplying the super high-quality bluray look I see every time I go to Best Buy.

I can't comment on the virtues of formatting the hard drive BUT I have replaced the laser in my PS3. However, if it still plays PS3 games then it is not the blu-ray laser that has stopped working.

If you want to replace the laser its much cheaper to do it yourself if your console is out of warranty.

Heh sorry man nothing personal, thought you were flaming, my bad. again i apologize, im half awake and typing tired and angry. Anyway, what kind of hdmi cable do you have. Higher end cables will produce a slightly better image quality. Not a HUGE difference, but if your a tech geek and notice the lil things like me you'll be able to see it. And i know it sounds like a silly question but are you sure your set will run a 1080P resolution?

I have a 3' Dynex HDMI cable and my PS3 and TV can go to 1080p (though for some reason keeps changing to 720 [something another may understand that I do not]). Every time I plug it into the TV it will change to the highest resolution possible and then get lower when I do something else. I don't really see any changes in how the movie looks, others around me agreeing when we watched Transformers 2. Sure once in a while we'll go "Oh it looks a little better...."

I had this problem about a year ago, my 60-gig stopped reading blu-rays and I was too much a pussy to try opening it up and fixing it myself. Sent it to Sony, cost me 150 bucks.

EDIT: Oh, and I tried reformatting and even using a blu-ray lens cleaner. Nothing worked.

hmmm, To me it sounds like your tv isn't 1080p and is faking and the ps3 is upconcerting your movies. perhaps your tv is actually 1080i and not 1080p. i mean, i know the ps3 had some issues with upscaleing and could actually be downscaling on certain models and tv's hold on lemme find the link...http://ps3.ign.com/articles/746/746282p1.html there. Is this what it sounds like it's doing? if so you need to connect your ps3 and downlaod the new firmware update. (i'm just assuming your ps3 isn't hooked up to the internet at all times, not everybodies is) If anything it sounds like some sort of software problem or maybe even a bad cable. ::shrug:: idk if you have have an optimal rig i've never heard of this happening before.

Do games play on it at all? That will distinguish if the laser has gone or not. Actually, since it is an old console, it will only have one laser and therefore if you can get anything to play on it, the laser is not the issue.

In order to replace it yourself, you first need to buy a replacement one.
This is the site I used to buy one, its not cheap but will save you $120 minimum. I'm pretty sure that you need the KEM-400AAA model but check it yourself just to make sure.
Replacing it once you get it is quite fiddly but also interesting. Get yourself a medium sized phillips head screwdriver and a set of smaller electrical screwdrivers.

The easiest way is to follow video tutorials, these are the ones I used:

I've got a tip for you that will save money. The PS3 has a special 'security screw' that you need a special screwdriver to take out. This is a waste of money. It looks like this:
The only thing that prevents you from using a standard flat head screwdriver on this screw is the pin in the middle. I (accidentally) broke the pin off by pushing it to the side too hard and was then able to just use a flat head screw driver to get it out. Although this worked for me, I can't say if it will for you. Everything else is described better in the videos than I can say it here.

Anyway, good luck.

Does it still play games? If it plays games and doesn't play Blu-ray then that'd be weird. As a solution, do what the Sony says and save your games to some external storage first.

Well that certainly is annoying. Just to clarify, in your previous posts you kept saying "PS2" games worked, did you mean PS3?
