Hi all, long time reader / commentator, first topic creation. Yay me.

Any way, a question:

My wife has produced me an interesting dilema and wanted some input from the learned sages of the Escapist.
She has proposed we get a PS3. However i have heard they are BEST played on high format TV's. So i commented as such to her, so she said "ok lets get a new TV then."

So my question is, does it make that huge a difference to the look of PS3 games to play them on an old 51" TV ? With this offer on the table, which would you choose ? and yes i'm a Sony follower since PS1 days, so no "buy the tv and get another console" comments please.

*edit* Also if you thin the TV any commentary on what would be a "good" TV to get would be appreciated.

Get the PS3, if you really dig it you can always go back to buying a TV later.

There is quite a difference in visual quality (especially with that sweet little HD cable) but I like to think I'm not jaded enough to get an expensive TV just for the graphics and I still use an old one.

You might just wait for the TV upgrade until GoW arrives :p

Your wife seems awesome btw

I play on my old Sony ?" widescreen TV, (probably 50kg and 50cm deep, which I got from a friend of mine for free) and I'm very satisfied with the graphics! Of course, for the ULTIMATE "This is living" experience, you should play with HD, but it's absolutely not a necessity!

I say buy the PS3 now, and wait with the new TV until sometime in the future when your wallet's back up functioning again.

Kindest regards!

Is this actually a real question? Why waste money on an over sized grill when you can have an awesome TV!

It's two different things... Get what you feel like having the most. With a PS3 you can game away and with an LCD-tv you can watch movies 'n shit. What do you feel like the most? I'd say get the PS3 and save up for the flatscreen. Also remember that if you want to have a proper setup you're also going to need a good speaker system.

PS3, save up, go hunting for a good TV+speaker setup.

I've been playing my PS3 on an OLD (roommate got it for free from craigslist) TV and the only potentially annoying thing I've had is that small fonts and credits are tougher to read (be prepared to squint a little). But I've been happy as a clam and definitely would make the same choice again.

A word of caution though: Be very careful about what kind of HD TV you get. My buddy has some kind of LCD (I know nothing about tech), and there's a fraction of a second's delay between controller input and onscreen picture. Now, games like Guitar Hero that would be ruined by this kind of thing have handy programs to sync the game with the delay, and I thought it would be unnoticeable on non-rhythm-based games. But then I played RE5 on it. I could still notice the delay, and it was NOT cool. I would gladly take my low-res TV over that high-res fraction of a second any day. Ask about that when buying the TV.

What size TV are you looking for? Because you'll spend a lot more on a large tv with a good picture than you will on a PS3. But if you don't have an HDTV then you won't be seeing the PS3's full potential.

i say get both, get one now and save up for the other

i've played a ps3 on both sd and hd tvs and there is a noticeable difference between the two. with movies it's not as much depending on the dvd player and tv and the movie itself

I have a PS3, and I admit, I use an old computer monitor to play it on. The graphics in my mind are still very good, and if I'm honest the idea of not having the best graphics I could get doesn't bother me too much...

I bought my Xbox360 with a Sony Bravia 19" at the same time, and after playing it on my mate's standard TV, I can honestly say it DOES make a difference with the HD.

The TV. outside PS2 games and LittleBig Planet, out PS3 is a doorstand. if you already have a 360, just about everything you want comes out on it anyways. Might as well enjoy the games you already have.

SDTV's give the truest blacks, so its not all doom and gloom. Honestly I would get the PS3, but I took ages myself to make the HD leap...
