Hey guys, my PS3 is opened up in front of me as we speak.

Before i get started i would like to list some things:
- This is not YLOD.
- There is no problem with the "internal thermometer".

The problem with my PS3 is that when turned on the fan kicks in to the highest speed.
On cool days this is not a problem, loud fan.. but no freezes or shut down.
However on a hot day (Being around 25 degrees C) a message is displayed as follows:

"Your PS3 is overheating, please turn off system to let it cool down"
This is followed by complete shutdown soon after.

I have the exact same issue as this guy, and as you see from the comments, they are mainly fucking useless.

What i plan on doing this time is to:
+ Re-apply better (Arctic silver) Paste.
+ Bend the pads to apply more pressure between CPU and Heat-sync.
+ Open up the fan to check for problems.

I am sure the problem is to do with the PS3 no being able to get rid of its heat, the air that blows out of the back is only slightly warm.

So please Escapist... Are there any other things i should do while it is open?

Do you have enough room at the back for air to circulate? If you have it in a cupboard or too close to a wall it might not be getting enough fresh air to keep it cool as it just re-cycles the expelled, heated air.

Your PS3 dreams of being a George Foreman grill. Get some bacon.
In all seriousness, I have no idea.

Nope its on a 70cm by 70cm box along with a flat screen tv that takes up very little room.
Having the window open helps it a lot though, maybe i should just keep it outside? Haha

this is where having an Xbox pays off!

shove it in the freezer.
And why is that?
Because they have a higher failure rate?
This is a release model 60gb, so it is quite old.

Thanks for you contribution.

I had this problem with my 80GB one, though probably not as severe.
Anyway, peel away your warranty sticker, there is a screw underneath, unscrew it to open the PS3 up and lightly and carefully hoover the dust away.
(And i mean CAREFULLY)

well release-model 360s do have an overheating tendency.

maybe because we use ours for longer cos theyre so good.

how am i not contributing. its a valid, tried and confirmed technique.

and if you get out so often its free, so you arent wasting money on gamer stuff, instead of hanging out with friends.

Make sure to clear out the vents!
I do that occasionally and it helps A LOT.
At least for a small amount of time...
Also delete some data, it may not help but i'm sure there is some stuff that you don't need ;P

Really?
REALLY?
And i thought we were mature here... if you have nothing useful to contribute and just want to start flame-wars, i suggest you go to 4chan...

Just while I remember, there are a few cooling mods that you could try if dusting/Arctic Silver doesn't work. I had checked them out before, and they look good in theory but then I just decided to get a slim so I'm not sure if they hold up over time or not
Most that i have seen involve cutting holes in the PS3..
Mine still starts up silently for 10 mins, but goes into over-drive.
I still may be able to sell it, since most game shops only turn it on for around 5 mins.

If this doesn't work... ill invest in a Slim.

Thinking about doing a factory reset..
Just need to back up saves and such first, not got much on my HDD that is really important.

I actually have a similar problem, but mine doesn't warn me, it just shuts off. It tends to do it the most with my multiplayer and open world games (AC, Infamous, PS Home, TF2)

Sometimes it won't even last ten minutes before it's a little **** and shuts down. Any tips and help?

I also have an Xbox, but you just shouldn't start console-wars and generally be a bother, also the fact that you have a PS3 means that you should have at least a little something to say...

Mine's the same btw, makes a lot of noise and crashes...
Anyway, maybe if you brought it in they could repair/ upgrade it, and i do beleive that if you delete game data but keep save data it makes things much more efficient, just don't take my word for it, my brother is experienceing problems (IE he can't find his save) with RDR...

Just don't do a fan-test, that can screw it up beyond repair.

Only do what he does however, the other options are things like factiry reset!

Better to use compressed air and blow the dust out. :p
That's why computer hardware/repair shops stock compressed air cans.

If it gives you anymore trouble, try a new fan. I've got an old "60gig" model PS3 (though now it has 320GB of storage) which has never failed on me... but I replaced the fan and thermal compound after reading up on heat issues it could possibly have. Sony and Microsoft really did cut a lot of corners building their new consoles...
