We've had our ps3 for a few years now, and ever since I've started gaming on it, I've noticed that sometimes, it will sound like it is working extremly hard to keep processing my game, movie, etc. Sometimes, I have to turn up the sound because the PS3 is chugging along so loudly. It doesn't stop me from playing, but I am curious as to why this happens. It is sometimes left on and unattended for a few hours, but sometimes, the noise will start up only a few minutes after I've turned it on.

Has anyone ever experienced this problem as well? Does anyone know how to fix it, or is that just something that every PS3 does?

All help/advice is appreciated. Thanks, guys!

Its got a huge fan that it puts to use when overheating, it doesn't mean its hurt, if your in an air conditioned room then its whisper quiet but during a hot sticky summer month then it will make noise.

I have a launch PS3 model and Sony assure me this is normal, doesn't make me any less worried about the situation though, PFFTT BZZZZ.

It looks like a monster and when hot and making that noise, I'm scared to go near it.

My Ps3 (phat) is suspended by two books to keep good circulation. I am considering buying a fan to prop up behind it, to keep cold air flowing under it. Since i suspended my Ps3, i noticed a big difference in the amount of times the backup fan would come on.

Ps. This applies to phat Ps3's only. If you turn it off from the back, hold down the eject button, and then turn it back on from the back, the backup fan will go into overdrive, clearing the vents of dust. Its good to do this every so often, as it helps circulation =]

Hope i've helped.

This applies to most electronics, probably does the same thing on your computer, I know it does on mine. It's just trying to keep the machine cool with the fans or else it would melt from overheating. If it's in a nice, cool room, then everything should be fine.

I get worried about it overheating in the summer because my room seems to absorb all the heat in the house, and the fan is pretty much blocked off. When i think my rooms a little too warm i give my ps3 a break every 2 hours.

I've never actually had a problem with it though, it's just me worrying too much. I don't get any noise either.

It sounds to me like your PS3's fan might be a little clogged with dust. If possible take a look inside and give it a quick clean if it needs one :p

I got a tower fan that can kind of blow a storm so when it goes "omigosh, don't break, don't break, don't break!" mode I turn the fan on the hurricane setting and 1 minute later all is well.
