I've got a better question: who cares? Why is this important? Both platforms have healthy sales or active userbase or whatever nonsense people want to go by in this dick measuring contest. Does it really matter which one has that extra 16th of an inch? Nobody is "winning" here... Well, more like nobody is losing here. So again, who cares?

To quote the thread title -- Wait, What?
I've had my PS2 since.... like, well, forever, and it hasn't broken down. None of my friends broke either, one got a slim after he (Purposefully, full of rage) broke his original. So I am a little confused by your statement...
You seriously haven't heard of the PS2 Disc Read Error fiasco? Early PS2s were about as reliable as early 360s. Okay maybe that's not a fair comparison, but the point is, a lot of early PS2s stopped working.
Plus, I lost count of how many times we sent our PS2 to Sony for repairs and they sent it back without fixing it. Or sure, it'd work for a week or two, but then it would die again. All they had to do was juts actually fix it, or give us a refurbished model that had been fixed, but no, they just kept sending us back the same broken console back over and over. Oh, and don't let me forget to mention that Sony's not repairing our PS2 took about a month each time. Then we replaced it with a PS2 slim and had to do the power brick exchange thing because there was just a slight defect in the slim power bricks that MIGHT cause them to catch fire and burn your house down.
Yeah, I personally wouldn't bring up the PS2 as an example of a reliable console with reliable service provided by the manufacturer. In fact, I'd say that the PS2 was one of the least reliable pieces of gaming hardware I've ever owned.
