Lost Planet, eye candy and fun as hell, also CAPCOM!
Disgaea 3, if you are into SRPGs, exploding penguin demons, anime/video game humor, random moments. Then go for this.
Saints Row 2, GTA like game that puts GTA to shame.
Mercinaries 2, Blowin shit up is always a nice thing to be able to do... any time you want.
Ratchet and Clank, It is a R&C game. If you have not played them for the PS2 then you sir are legaly declared insane, please report to the nearest rental store to play the series then call me in the morning if the inflamation does not go away.

If you were to get Fallout 3 get it for PC or if you have it the 360, PS3 got screwed with the whole no DLC thing.

Street Fighter 4, better to play on the PS3 controller than the 360's.
Killzone 2, beautiful game with fun online.
Resistance 1, one of the best titles that was launched with the system. Kind of short but worth replaying a few times.
Resistance 2, builds upon the first game with a lot more epic battles.
and get yourself a PSN game like Noby Noby Boy or Flower or such. There are a lot of pretty good ones.

Ok, well i don't know how much you like racing games, but I thought that Motor Storm: Pacific Rift was fantastic. It has a number of changes from the first one, all good ones, and it is one of the few games on the PS3 that allows for four players offline. All the other suggestion before this one are good too, but this was the only game I can say that I was not in anyway disappointed with.

OK, so I've acquired a PS3. It's in the living room awaiting hookup as I type. No games as of yet: I was going to pick up one or two on the way home from work tonight. I wanted to get opinions on what games I should buy and what I should rent. I searched the forums here, and the most recent thread was almost 2 months old, so maybe some new games have come out?

I know about LBP and Uncharted. I'm not a fan of the MGS series. Generally, I'll play anything, but I tend to like games with good graphics (I paid all that money for a 1080p TV after all) and good stories, it really doesn't matter as to the genre, although JRPGs have to work a lot harder to hold my attention for some reason.

So... if you're going to the store and you can buy 5 games, tell me which five you get, and (more importantly) why.
I wouldnt bother w/ LBP. It will get old after a week. It seems revolutionary & all that, but the gameplay just sucks. It's def no Super Mario Bros in the controls dept.

Uncharted, while fun, is way overpriced for such an old game. Wait until Uncharted 2 comes out and then it will be like $30 MSRP.

If you have a Blockbuster near you, go there. You should be able to get a NEW copy of Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction for $30. And MGS4 for $30 (if you like that kind of game; a lot of people do, personally though i found it slow).

Get a $20 PSN card and get Wipeout HD off of PSN (or just use ur credit card). Thats the best PSN game & the sharpest looking PS3 game w/ 1080p @ 60fps. Also has a good online community. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix is also an awesome game, and the netcode is very good, you cant even notice lag. Marvel vs Capcom 2 will be AMAZING, thats a def get.

Tekken 6 will be a PS3 game you'll want, as it will be arcade perfect (the arcade machine runs PS3 hardware).

Soul Calibur 4 is another game you'll want for PS3. The boob physics are noticeably better than the 360 version. Plus the game is just pure awesome & has tons of replay value.

GTA4, if you dont already have it.

Gran Turismo 4 Prologue looks amazing, but they still havent delivered the promised patched of damage physics yet.

Resistance 2 has a fun multiplayer mode & a decent story (though not as good as gears imho).

Killzone 2 looks great, but the controls feel sloppy and inaccurate. I would wait on that until it gets to greatest hits price.

edit: I forgot Darksiders: Wrath of War that's going to be a really fun game.

Is your Ps3 backwards-compatible?

Worth buying:
Valkyria Chronicles. <-- Only if you like rpg strategy, otherwise bo-ring
Metal Gear Solid 4. <-- Only if you liked the old MGS games
Grand Theft Auto 4. <-- Fun as long as you're not offended by excess violence
Little Big Planet. <-- Overhyped, controls suck
Fallout 3. <-- Good buy, only if your PC can't run it
Oblivion. <-- Good buy, only if your PC can't run it
Disgaea 3. <-- No idea, never played it
Orange Box. <-- Don't even bother PS3 version is horrible. Get it for PC or 360.
proof http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=89373

Great games that might be better as rentals:
Assassin's Creed. <-- agreed, fun for a little while. but very very repetitive
Dead Space. <-- worth buying if you can find it for $30
Heavenly Sword. <-- rental only, very short game; no replay value
Uncharted. <-- worth buying at $30

PSN games that are awesome:
Last Man. <-- eh, it's basically snake http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_(video_game)
Burnout Paradise. <-- Wipeout HD is much more visceral & actually has tracks
Noby Noby Boy. <-- never tried it
Flower. <-- if you're a grandma
PixelJunk Monsters. <-- better PC strategy games that are free
Savage Moon. <-- never tried it

Unreleased games to watch for:
Tekken 6. <-- FOR SURE
Final Fantasy XIII <-- OH YEA
White Knight Chronicles. <-- not all it's cracked up to be

Yes.

And thanks for the recommendations. Keep them coming if you would. I see that I should probably go rent some games rather than buying them, at least initially.

Oh, and just as an FYI, I don't have a PS2 and anything that can be run on a PC, I already have. I'm definitely going to be taking advantage of the the BluRay capability. That was my main initial interest.

You should get Jak and Daxter (all of them).

There are lots of downloadable titles as well, like Pixeljunk Eden, Fl0wer and Wipeout.

Also, if you're into Blu-Ray, then maybe you should buy some movies.

Regarding all those who recommend Disgaea 3, seeing as you have backwards-compatibility, I would seriously suggest the first Disgaea. A fantastically written game. However, the 2nd was quite simply the worst sequel of all time, so I'd be weary before investing in the third game.

I want the PS3 for one reason. Ratchet & Clank.

Snake can go die in a hole.
Sackboy can go...do whatever Sackboy does.
Killzone can enter the killzone and get killed.

"Street Fighter IV" for some perfect vs action, plus online if there is no one around you for convenience.
"Rock Band 2" is the single best party game out there, and is made better with Rock Band 1, ACDC and assorted DLC songs.
"Grand Theft Auto IV" has a great storyline, along with fun gameplay.
"Valkyria Chronicles" is one of those sleeper hits that has a great story and has innovative gameplay elements all in one.

Do you have a computer that's decent? Because then Oblivion, Fallout, Orange Box are all better on the PC.

Ones to watch for:

"God of War III"
"Heavy Rain"
"Final Fantasy XIII"
"Final Fantasy vs XIII"
"Uncharted II"

Like you I play many genres, so Im gonna try and cover a few with my reccomendations, Ive had my ps3 about a year...if i had to just buy 5 games, playing all that i have, id go with...

Fallout 3
for both gameplay and how beautiful it is, its the first game i think i have ever been truly addicted to.

A beat em up is a necessity for me, Id go with Soul Calibur IV
for its character building and various gaming modes

Little Big Planet
is immense fun and i think has something for everyone, platformer, online play, level building etc.

Call of Duty World at War,
my first venture into anything of this genre and the game i play most online with others, ive heard that the single player campaign is much better in COD 4 but can really vouch for this one for the online play

And my fifth is a tricky one, if you want something real pretty go with Wipeout HD from the PSN store, otherwise id advise anyone to pick up

The Orange Box,
I dont know where you live but its a bargain pre-owned here and cheap brand new, its a decent variety of games, and portal is on my top 5 games of all time list.

I echo what people are saying about checking out the store too..games like flow, flower, super stardust are all great fun and good value :)
