PS3 Problem

So recently (started just yesterday) I've been having a graphical problem with my PS3. There are these random rectangles that flash between black, and a color that would normally be there. It's gotten progressively worse since then where practically the whole screen is plagued by these rectangles.

The first thing I was concerned about my TV. But I tried my GameCube and it worked just fine. My friend suggested my HDMI cables but I switched to my AV cables and it was still there.

Has anyone else had this problem or know anything about it? I'd prefer to not have to buy a new PS3 and if anyone has any ideas of what the problem might be, I'm open to any suggestions.

Technically, it's still playable, but the fact that it's getting worse is what's really worrying.

Oddly enough, that's triangles, but in games it's rectangles. Also, it's almost consumed my whole screen now so it's even worse than I thought it was when I started this thread.

Wait, are you saying that there are flashing rectangles on your TV screen?

...

This confuses me a bit. I have never ever heard of this before.

Sounds like it could be something to do with the where the cords are plugged into on your PS3.

Is it a single game causing the problem or does it come across multiple games?
It's on the main menu thing, and any game that I play.

I'll try to take a picture of it. But that is the best way to describe it flashing rectangles. I assume it's the tiles and such because that's where it started.

EDIT: A picture is in the OP.

Dude, I had the same problem with one of my 360s. I'm pretty sure it is the graphics card. Except mine never restarted. I got an E74 error or something.

Damn, well I'm hoping to try to fix it before it gets to the point that I have to buy another one. But if all else fails, I guess that's all I can do.

I don't it's one of those things that can be a homebrew repair. Have you called Sony? I know those things have warrantys.

If your warranty is already expired, you could always contact sony about repair service. Ive heard rumors that they will fix just about anything wrong with a PS3 for around $160, but you have to pay for shipping...

If it's still under warranty I say send it in, it looks like a graphics card error best I can tell. If you have no warranty/it expired then send it in for repairs, probably cheaper than buying a new one.

You can apply pretty much the same knowledge you get from computers, to this. Typically, artifacts on the screen are due to an overheating graphical chipset. On newer computer stuff, if it has a fan, and the fan goes off, slowly but surely, artifacts will begin to appear all over the screen, and only worsen in game. If I were yo take a shot in the dark, i would guess that the fan over said chipset in the PS3 is either jammed, broken, or just unplugged from its socket.
To be safe though, don't just rip open your PS3. I have a friend who has two PS2's on a desk in his room, in complete pieces. Just send it to Sony.

Well one thing's for sure; it's not your TV else the problem would overlap your icons instead of the other way around.

Well, the general opinion seems to be that I should just send it in to Sony. I'm going to try to find out if it's still under warranty and if not then it's probably not going to get fixed any time soon.

Usually, I don't like to have to deal with Sony Customer Service (they haven't exactly been helpful in the past), but it seems like that's my only choice.

Well, you've all been helpful. Looks like I'll be calling Sony later today (it's 1 AM here)
