PS3 Problems...

Last night I was trying to get my brother's turtle beach headset (made for a 360) to work on my PS3 without the proper adapters and whatnot when my PS3's HDMI port suddenly stopped working.

I looked on the internet for a bit and found a few suggestions as to what I should do, and none of them worked.

I've tried resetting the PS3 by holding the power button for several seconds while in standby; that didn't work. I tried hooking to the TV using the standard AV cables, which gave a picture and allowed me to attempt to manually switch the PS3's display settings to HDMI, but that ultimately didn't work either.

It's like my PS3 literally can't detect the HDMI cable, which would imply that something hardware related is broken, but I'm 99% sure that's not the case since it was working perfectly until I started screwing around with my brother's gaming headset.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be the problem?

A slight issue, while trying to do the AV cable manual switch to HDMI trick, my PS3 said that it detected an HDMI source, but when I selected the option to switch to it (and switched my TV to the correct HDMI input) it came up with a flashing message saying "mode not supported".

Actually, I run into that sometimes with my Samsung. I just turn the TV off and on again. Also, can you just keep the TV on the HDMI port where the PS3 is plugged into?

Do you have another TV or monitor you can plug the PS3 into? It would be really helpful to get into Display Settings-->Video Output Settings.

Yeah, I tried that last night as well as just a few moments ago (I'm assuming you meant going into video output settings and manually switching the output to HDMI?) and I just get the same "mode not supported" thing for 30 seconds before it goes back to outputting from the AV cables. Also, to clarify, I did make sure to switch my TV to the correct HDMI input after doing that, so it's (probably) not a dumb mistake on my part.

Oh, no I meant plugging the PS3 into any other compatible TV or display. The PS3 used to be finicky back in the day. Like, the old fatty BC version, I had trouble playing GTA IV on it because the game would default to 720p even though I was playing on a 1080p plasma. I had to manually deselect all over video modes through that menu on the PS3 just to get 1080p to stick.

At this point for you, I think it would be great if you could just see something--anything--on a different TV.

I forgot to ask, but what are the capabilities of the TV you're trying to use now? Does it go up to 1080p?

I can't believe I didn't mention this sooner. Can you try a different HDMI cable? I remember once I had trouble getting the HDMI recognized on an older TV and I had never considered the cable. I was using a very cheap one, no-name brand. The head actually came loose and I was able to rip it off completely with just two fingers.

I think there's still a few more options we can try. One is to connect to the same TV using both your AV cables and HDMI. You should be able to see an image but I believe the PS3 will prompt you with a message like 'found HDMI' and ask if you want to use it.

In retrospect, I think you could benefit from the Rebuild Database option that I was just talking to Johnny Novgorod about. I've been curious about the effects of that myself, and I wonder if I can eliminate the lag coming from playing Saints Row 2 online.

My PS3 eventually powered on and it went straight to the Safe Mode selection screen. I chose Option #3, Restore File System. Then I was prompted that it had detected HDMI and asked if I wanted to use it.

Next, the PS3 stated that there were corrupt or missing system files, which probably isn't true as I don't really screw around with my consoles, but it might be a standard warning type message.

The Restore File System option only takes a few minutes. It's restarting now.

None of the important stuff has changed after using option 3. My PSN password still works, therefore my WiFi password is still loaded. Movies saved into folders haven't moved and the thumbnail previews I chose for them are all the same.
Other than system changes that I'm unaware of, the only change I can see is my wallpaper was reset to the default PS3 background. I think this step may benefit you.[hr]

I would unplug everything but the HDMI, leaving it in both the PS3 and your HDTV. Then I would follow the steps to get to the Safe Mode selection screen and follow from there. Hopefully the prompt to use HDMI will be the very first thing you see.

Just tried it, it wouldn't work with the HDMI, so I decided to try it using my AV cables; no dice.

I'm starting to think I should just back up my HDD and wipe it.

Sorry to hear that. Just remember that there are certain game saves that cannot be copied; I imagine a proper external HDD backup will save them. In those cases it's helpful to have Playstation Plus.

Was it a USB headset? That sucks to have to go through all of this just for a headset.

Yeah, I just renewed my PS+ subscription so I could have that handy cloud storage.

As for the headset, it was a Turle Beach X12, I believe. It had all sorts of cables and adapters and I remember my brother somehow getting it to work with my PS3 before, but I suppose that was out of my league.

Thanks for the help though, it's at least nice to have been able to make an effort of fixing it.
