I bought a 320GB PS3 slim last Novermber, and that one ended up going freezing up constantly on start-up and had to be sent back and fixed. Well I got it back and downloaded some DLC for it and it's starting to run real slow. The menu icons takes about a minute to load after the menu bar has appearaed (which takes about twenty seconds after the PS3 start up chime has finished), and running some of the DLC stored on the console is laggy and what not. Plus playing Dragon Age origins it takes close to a minute for the game to save, and several minutes to load. I have a feeling that it's because of the Downloaded stuff, but I have no idea what specifically is the problem. And

Just for completeness sake, my DLC list is;

All Batman: Arkham Asylum challenge maps

All Dragon Age Origins DLC

Scott Pilgrim Vs the World

Dead Space Ignition

Dead Space 2 Collector's edition content

All Resident Evil 5 DLC.

The Assassin's Creed 2 collector's edition DLC, plus the two Animus updates

The Heavy Rain patch and Chronicles 1

LittleBigPlanet2 Collector's Edition DLC

The MGS Database

The Dragon Age 2 demo (now deleted)

WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2011 online pass content

I also have the latest firmware installed, although I was at 3.56 when the lag started.

Can anyone help me? I don't want to have to send it back again, especially since it was a replacement for my 60GB which broke. I also just got Dragon Age 2, so I don't want for all my PS3 games to be wasted.

The only thing I can think of is that you're playing the thing in a room that's way too hot or way too cold. Then again, I know less than nothing about technical specifics of Playstation 3s.

I thought about that, but disregarded it. The 360 works fine, and the PS3 worked fine out of the box, slowed down when I restored a backup of the one I sent back, worked fine when I reformated, and now is freezing up with the DLC.

I would check to see how much space is left on your PS3. If it's low, try uninstalling all of the data (NOT SAVE FILES) of the games you don't play anymore.

It's a brand new 320GB PS3 Slim. Trust me, I'm nowhere near even a quarter full.

I had about half of it on my 60GB, and it ran perfectly. I hope it doesn't happen to you.

My thinking is, though I couldn't even begin to guess how you deal with it, that your programs and saves and whatnot have some kind of problem to 'em which interacts badly with the system, a software-related glitch which it needs a minute to resolve.

Maybe it's the hard drive, as it sounds that it's a hard drive issue. I really don't know speciffically wich kind of HDD the PS3 uses, but from the sound of it, it's not normal for that to happen.

If you can or are willing to do so, start looking for a better HDD, or if you are that desperate and have a few houndreds to share, buy an SSDD, it's like a glorified flash pendrive, but with a lot more space, a lot more faster and, in theory, should last you a lot longer than a regular HDD.

My main problem here is that this happened across two different PS3s (according to the back up utility the one I currently own is not the one I sent back), which confuses the hell out of me. ANother problem is that the DLC and game data saves directly to the built-in hard drive, so I can't use any form of external hard drive in this case.

Although I think what I'm going to do is, after I copy across all my save data since my last back up, is delete some of my DLC and see if that changes anything. I have a feeling it's the Dragon Age Origins stuff that's responsible, although it's only a hunch.

Sounds like it's your backup data. Any chance that it was corruption that killed your last one? Restoring a backup or a corrupt system is likely to have a similar killing effect.

There was corrupted data when I downloaded Lenilna's song on the old one, and I think that's going to be the cause of what's wrong this time.

Also my PS3 froze. Not good.

Sounds like it might be. Try a restore but re-download a fresh install for the corrupted data.

Okay, update.

I saved what save data I could to a USB, but alas DA:O is not one of them. I reformatted the PS3, and went to install Origins. But there was a new patch, so I installed that first. One long installation sequence later I get to character creation and it is sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. I back out, delete the game data, try again but didn't install the patch first and it works fine.

So my question is, would isntalling the patch data first be the problem? Or is patch 1.06 bad for my PS3?
