Hi, I've had my ps3 for almost a year, and up until now i've been using it with my standard definition, CRT, 32 inch phillips (which broke recently), i've just got a new hd ready 32 inch panasonic, the TX-32LXD85 to be precise.

I like it but i'm not so impressed with how my ps3 games look. I've played a decent assortment including GTA4, MGS4, unreal 3, pes09, LBP and mirrors edge, and while they all look really good for the most part, I feel this is more down to the high level of detail made possible with the ps3's power, rather than the number of pixels. As far as i can remember, the games lookes pretty much just as good on my old standard defiinition, and any changes seem like they might simply be down to the different technology: lcd as opposed to CRT. The only notable differences are that the text is now very clear, and some slightly more dramatic effects seem to occur with lighting in some games.

It might be my exagerated memory, but i feel as though i remember seeing more impressive images on other hd ready screens. On my friends Hd ready JVC for example, fifa 08 on the 360 (as far as i can remember) looks on a different level. Its not even that it is more impressive then what i'm seeing now with MGS4 and so on, because it isn't, but there was a deffinite hd quality to it, everything looked so well defined (such as players in the background) and colours were so deep they sort of jumped out so to speak.

Even more alarming is that in some of the games i'm playing now, many edges of objects which are supposed to be strait lines, and which are not completely verticle or horizontal, still show how they are made up of steps of smaller lines, which looks very un-impressive. Is this normal for an hd ready tv? Don't worry I am using an hdmi cable and have my ps3 set to hdmi output.

Can anyone else describe their experiences of the difference between a ps3 or 360 on hd ready vs SD tvs? Or offer any advice slash comfort?

You have to make sure that your PS3 is actually set to output in HD. You also have to make sure the colour is set properly in both the PS3 options and the TV (the default setting for the PS3 washes the colour out a little).

Also, welcome to the world of marketing. HD 1080p is a buzz word for 1920x1080 resolution, which for the price you pay for it is massively overcharged.

I once had a pair of PS3s set up in my room to play Mercs 2 - I was on the brand new TV via a HDMI cable, the other was on a standard TV using standard connection.

The difference was really noticeable.

Does anyone find it to be a major DICK move that Sony doesn't bundle any HD cords with the PS3? Not to sound like a fanboy, but when I got my 360 Elite (I can't speak for newer Pro models or those with HDMI ports) it came with component and HDMI cords. I opened my PS3 MGS4 bundle only to find that I had to use my own HDMI cord. For a system that really relies on HD and is a Blu Ray player, you'd think they'd have the decency to include the cable you need to get the most out of it. Instead they decided to take advantage of those poor people who haven't heard of Monoprice and sold it separately at a major markup.

They didn't include it, because they felt that not enough consumers actually owned HDTVs, and that by including an HDMI cable they'd be passing on the higher cost to the consumer...

Of course since they only really cost about $5...

hmmm ya i noticed that in one or two games on my new hdtv (the straight lines thing, i mean). Walking through a forest in oblivion is a painful experience - the grass is so jagged it looks like the ground is flickering. But some games, like resistance 2, look so amazing in hd that you almost want to cry....

I think the problem is that the PS3 (and I'm not sure, so correct me if I'm wrong) doesn't anti-alias its image, so the same image on an SDTV will have smoother edges since the interlacing is kind of a built-in anti-aliasing.

This guy says his TV is HD ready...isn't that different then an HDTV? I've got a 40" LCD 1080p HDTV, and my 360 looks brilliant. Night and day between that and a standard tube.

Aren't HD ready tubes only, like, 480p or 720i MAX? I could be wrong, but that's what I thought/was told.

Go to display settings and change "RGB Full Range(HDMI)" to "Full" and change "Super White" to "On". No I missed your last sentence about setting your PS3 up, however I stand by what I said.

High def is nothing more than marketing.

Man, it's the SOUND that the PS3 really kicks ass with.

If you're like me and that other poster who keeps talking about the sound quality from the PS3, Blu-ray and HDTV, you'll have the 5.1 Dolby and know what we're talking about.

HD Ready means it doesn't have an HD tuner, so you can't just plug in an antenna and get the signal. You need a separate ATSC tuner like a cable/satellite box to get HDTV. It displays HD content just fine.

Yes I have had the same experience with the latest TV I have bought 32" Panasonic HD Ready. I could not afford to buy a Full-HD TV regardless of the brand because my main concern was the video frame rate. Why? on my old sharp LCD tv (not even and HD ready one) I played Devil May Cry 4 using component cable and I used to suffer from the picture jitters specially I like to play action games such as Devil MAy Cry 4. I was also hungry to live the experience of playing video games using an HDMI!!!

When I played DMC4 on my new 32" Panasonic HD ready TV and with the feature of Motion Picture Pro 100 Hz, I was so stunned with the picture quality and smooth motion. I then bought DMC4 to play it on my XBOX360 to eXperiment the difference between the 2 versions. I noticed the following, which might match your point of you regarding an HD-Ready TV:
1- PS3 brings sharper details but the picture is not smooth.
2- XBOX360 brings visible graphics' details but nor as sharp as PS3 because its media is Dual-layered DVD but overshadows PS3 because it is so smooth!

Are we talking about the Anti-Alias feature in video games? Please share the discussion with me!
As a graphic designer I get paranoid when I play video games because I can't ignore those picture/graphics differences such as pixelation and anti-alias. Please let me know if it is only my eyes that see those errors!

You should use an HDMI cabel. And set your PS3 on HD.
I was moderately irritated when I plugged in my PS3 a few weeks ago only to find that it's not actually HD ready out of the box. Luckily, I had a spare HDMI cable from an old Xbox that works nicely.

For me, there is an immense difference. When I got my Xbox 360, I was playing on a (rather small) non HD TV. The games looked fantastic and all but I never appreciated just how much better they looked until I got my HD TV. Actually, in one instance (Gears of War) I was annoyed because on my old TV I never noticed the texture pop - something that annoys me to this day.

You're using HDMI, right? I would ask if you're running at 720p or 1080p but it doesn't freaking matter because most games only run at 720p (or 1080i which is just an interlaced barrel of lies), and the ACTUAL resolution of the game is often even lower than that! When you change the resolution of the TV, it doesn't change the resolution of the game.

Most HD Ready tv's (mine included) support 1080i and 720p. Many games look better in 720p but the PS3 seems to prefer displaying stuff in 1080i. So I'd advise you to try and disabling the 1080i setting. The results of this vary from game to game though.

And that.
