Interesting. On the bright side for those impacted, it sounds like this is possibly a software issue then and not a hardware issue. which means it's something that Sony may be able to patch out.

That is a far simpler problem then I expected, I know that the PS3 required absurd amounts of work to be brought back from the dead.

But is removing the HDD allowed under warranty?

Yes, there are 2 ways to remove the HDD, and there is a slot on the bottom that allows you to change it without voiding the warranty. Sony's been saying how you can change it without voiding the warranty.
