Bad decision, Xbox controller is objectivly better. Even Wii U pro controller seems way better. And this coming from someone who has way more hours with Dualshock than 360 controllers.
It isn't objectively better, it's all down to personal preference and your own physical limitations. It's also affected by the shape of the controller as well. The shape of the 360 controller lends itself better to the top placement because it's designed for it to fit snugly in your hand. A PS3 controller is smaller and designed to be held loosely to allow easier movement to different areas of the controller, with the 'rest state' having your thumbs symmetrical and your hands relaxed. I prefer the DS3 for that reason, but I find nothing wrong with the 360 layout (although I often joke about it :p). The biggest problem with the 360 controller is and always be the d-pad.

No it is not, our natural rested state is in our DNA, which for me is actually higher up than those things, basically inverting both sticks with the dpad and buttons.
I think they meant 'in Sony's DNA', it's a figure of speech.

I prefer the 360 controller(really dislike the console though), so that's sad. However, as long as they've fixed the trigger buttons to not suck I'll manage.

I believe you're right. Ah, well, don't I feel a bit silly. Actually reading my post I'm surprised it was so together considering I was high as a kite on Ambien CR and fighting sleep for some reason.

I've really got to stop doing that.

I just hope the Dual Shock 4 is a huge improvement over the 3. The 3 just simply hurt my hands to use for very long. A problem I've had with every iteration of "Sony's controller DNA".

This new one looks set to improve greatly on pretty much all fronts. I don't think the symmetrical sticks were ever the problem with the Dual Shock. It was that it feels so tiny in my hands and the grips always dug in rather than allowing the controller to rest comfortably.

I've liked every version of Xbox's controller. And the new one looks to not change too much, which is exactly what I wanted it to do. Hopefully the fact that they moved the GUIDE button higher will stop the annoying tendencies my friends have of "accidentally" bumping it during rounds of fighting games just as I'm about to clobber them. Or at least it'll hopefully make it more difficult for them to "accidentally" interfere.

Thank God. I just plain prefer the Playstation controllers over Xbox ones. So this is good news to me. Though, I wouldn't have minded if they had the other as an option. Just wouldn't use it personally.

As for those who think the Xbox controller is better, that is your opinion. Respect mine. And if you really want to use that design, I know there are Xbox style controllers for the PS3 and there will likely be some for the PS4 at or near launch.

a precedent the former company set with the Xbox 360
You're just wrong with this. The original Xbox controller had the analog stick placed in the upper left where it was easier to hold. And if you want to be completely correct about it, the Dreamcast controller had the analog stick there.
Actually the 3D Saturn pad was the first to do it. The Dreamcast is obviously based on the 3D pad, and the Xbox pad is a clear modification on the Dreamcast design, right down to the memory cards in the controller. So if we really wanted to we could trace the DNA of the Sbox One controller all the way back to the Genesis since the 3D is a modified Saturn, which is a modified 6 button Genesis, which is a modified 3 Button.

Anyways, I'm glad the decided to keep the old design. I like both controllers for different kinds of games, and I'm glad I can still have both designs. The Playstation controller is infinitely better for 2D platformers and fighting games for example, while the Dreamcast/Xbox design excels in the realm of 3D platformers and hack n slash ala Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry. I guess it's also better for FPS games, but I'm just gonna continue to stick to a mouse for those.

People, the 360 controller IS objectively better then the PS3 controller. The analog sticks literally have nothing to do with that tho, just the curve of the handles are a million times more ergonomic and the triggers are far far superior. I also use a 360 controller with a proper D-pad too. If you have trouble adjusting to different placement of sticks, your a whiny shit. I got used to the 360 stick adjustment after 8 years of the PS2 in 15 minutes. It isn't that hard.

Still, better leave it how it was then let people *****.
The layout is not better. Unless you've found a study that somehow objectively 'proves' your assertion (good luck finding something like that), every opinion is subjective. It's defined by experience and expectation. For Playstation users (the people likely to buy the PS4 first), the current layout is deeply preferred for a lot of us. Seems to me that someone insisting their experience and opinion is objective and everyone else is a "whiny shit"...probably doesn't know what a mirror is.

On a subjective note, I can't stand the Xbox controller, though I can certainly see the value of improving the triggers on the PS4 controller.

No, the 360 contrller is subjectively better for you. Personally i always found it quite laughable how people seem to cater to "Ergonomics" like the whole" healthy food" craze thats going right now. not only its not actually ergonomic (or healthy to go with example), in fact it makes matters worse most of the time. the whole ergonomic keyboard and mouse set ups makes my hand ache after less than an hour, whereas the good old regular setup i can use for 16 hours straight without any strain. same goes for this controller, whoever decided that making the stick above is ergonomic must have been measuring it by a population of one - him self and his own preferences.

Its not about adjusting, its about comfort. and having sticks in different height is not comfortable for people, thus they use different controllers (PS or 3rd party with xbox). those that think it's comfortable use 360 controller. its all about subjective preference.

You know what? Fuck both of those, we all know Gamecube was the most ergonomically comfortable controller. Even the Wii Pro classic was pretty good in the hands.

Well if you're going to copy a controller it may as well have been a good one. But anyway it was smart (I guess?) to stick with the PS model, it's an ok controller as it is anyway.

ITS GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FUCKING STICK PLACEMENT. What I'm saying is that the reason the 360 controller was better was mostly because the handles, as in what your gripping, curve in a way to make it more comfortable to hold. The stick placement isn't even a factor. (Not that it makes the controller any worse, after 5 minutes I cant tell the difference of either format)
And what i am saying is that shape and button placement of a controller being more comfortable is a subjective matter and there is no one size fits all, therefore neither can be objectively better, because it is subjective measurement to begin with.
