PSN problem

PSN works perfectly for me, except in one aspect, connecting with friend. I can get int any online game without hassle, and yet, whenever I try to join a friend's game, or vice-versa, it always fails. Can anyone shed some light on this and offer tips on how to fix it?

like what is your connection?
what is his connection?
do you have routers?
what internet provider do both of you have?
can you ping your friend from your computer?

By connection, I assume you mean percentage, so for me, it ranges between 75-100, and I don't know for him. we both use routers, and we both have comcast. And I have no idea what ping means. =P
