From IGN: http://gear.ign.com/articles/109/1090628p1.html
info about it from artcile: VG247 reported today that Sony's long-rumored successor to the PSP is unlikely to be shown at E3, and is expected to debut at Tokyo Game Show or GamesCom later this year. The site went on to detail the purported features of the new device; specifically that it will feature two cameras, a touch-screen display, and will feature a four-core Cell processor. While we have heard chatter about camera integration and touch-screen controls in the past, the four-core processors is a fairly new addition to the rumor mill. The inclusion of a powerful four-core processing system would be a large boost over current iterations, and to it put into perspective, is about half the power of the PS3, which runs on an eight-core variation.

It also said in the article that the PSP 2 might have dual analog sticks like many have wanted.

So whatd do you guys think? Could the psp 2 if it exists, compete with the 3DS (or what ever its new name is.)

I would be very happy with dual analog sticks, and if it does have that much power, we could be seeing great looking portable games.

It can surely compete with the 3DS. Maybe not in sales, but in quality, it most likely will.

I'll only get it if they release Disgaea 3 on it; that game makes buying the PSP completely worth it now, so I'd have no problem getting a new hand held if I could play yet another Disgaea on the go.

Is it just me or does that description seem to suggest that this "handheld" will be gigantic?

ooh a 4 core Cell processor? that could be a HUGE mistake.

That much power = good. That much power requirement = very very bad

If they give it dual analog sticks then it might not fail, but knowing Sony it will probably be the PSP GO! but with some new gimmick that makes it just as shitty as the previous iteration.

The only reason I got the first one was because I won it off of a McDonald's promo. Unless they seriously improve the graphics (and add a second analog stick), I doubt I'll be getting this one. [sub] Unless I win it at McDonald's again. [/sub]

I'll believe it when I see it, rumors like this pop up every now and then that mention some odd stuff and turns out to be a hoax or something. I personally don't care about cameras or touch screens "Bah!!" I say to those, I don't see the point in such things. And a 4-core processor? that's pretty damn cool (if it's true), but it better be well optimized to not murder you battery.

For all those petty people bitching about 2 analog sticks, it's pretty much guaranteed to have it seeing as I recall Sony mentioning a while back that when developing the PSPgo they considered dual analog. They ultimately left it out for the sake of this next generation perhaps.

The biggest concern I have; because quite honestly I'm not as hung up about touch screens and dual analog, is the storage medium. If they go full digital distribution it will be a huge mistake and I will kill kittens. Now they can still have digital around and all, but don't be stupid Sony, don't get rid of physical storage. Now they don't have to be UMDs per se, I'd be quite happy with carts like the DS has or those pro duo sticks the PSP already uses. And for god sake please keep backwards compatibility, or at the very least offer some sort of UMD drive add on. I love my PSP and I'd like to still play them on your new handheld in some way that doesn't involve rebuying or ripping the games.

They could easily take what was good about the Go and older models and work it in. Internal storage is hopefully a given, with the option for expandable memory like the current hardware, said memory slot can also be used for games if simply put on those types of carts.

The only other major concern is library, I ain't buying it if until it has a library I'm curious about. I can hold faith that it will though, no game system is without it's golden games.

Just my thoughts from from a happy owner for 3 years. Don't disappoint me Sony, you got great potential here and I want you tapping into it.

If it really has a 4-core cell processor, then the 3DS is dead.
see I really disagree with this.

The PSP is FAR more powerful than the DS, but the DS is FAR more popular. The lack of battery life on the PSP was a huge drawback at launch (sorta fixed in later iterations, but still not really comparable to that of the DS). With a 4-core Cell, battery life will once again become a huge issue that Sony has to fix. Portable systems aren't all about graphical power, they're about battery life and game library, as Nintendo (which has time and time again come out with a less powerful system, since back in the Gameboy vs GameGear days) has proven.

This thing would defeat every handheld/portable device on the market. 3D-DS, iPad, iPhone, etc. I will buy it. probably not right away. I can't stand hardware launches. Unless there is some astounding game coming out with it.

OT: Stop calling it the 3DS. 3DS is taken. 3DS Max, or 3D Studio Max is a program made by Autodesk, and awesome. Call it the 3D-DS or something. I know the name is placeholder, but its still taken.

also OT: Dude, 3d studio max is, was, and always will be abbreviated as 3DSMAX, not 3DS. But you won't have to worry long as they're "revealing" the official name next month at e3

You're trying to tell me that a portable system with half the power of a PS3 would be unpopular?
Depends on several other factors (and half the CPU power is NOT half the power. You have to include things like RAM, Graphic processor, etc), but the PSP launched when the PS2 was still the main platform and it had half the power of that. It was (and is) vastly more powerful than the DS, yet which system is BY FAR the more popular of the two?

When it comes to portable systems it's not all about power. Nintendo has proven this time and time and time again with literally EVERY generation of their portable systems, starting with the original Game Boy, which competed against the vastly more powerful Game Gear (which also had a color screen instead of black-on-green, but the GG was plagued by crappy battery life and a lack of games. sound familiar?) and beat the pants off it.
