I was going to get custom firmware so I could rip my PSX games to my PSP (not download that's illegal).
Can I still play PSN games with it?
Which one should I get?
What ripping service should I get?
What are the consequences?
Is what I want to do legal?
Does anyone on here custom firmware?

I think that is what you may want. Poke around the site or other sites for emulators and stuff. Hope that site answers all your questions.

As for the consequences of modding? well it nulls your warranty, small risk of bricking your PSP if something wrong happens, and if you update to the latest PSP firmware it will override the CFW. Weather it is legal or not is a rather debatable subject and it's more or less a double edged sword. I don't have CFW and I really couldn't care less as I got a pretty big PSP library, CFW would just allow me to play my snes, nes, and gba games. I will wait till my 2 year warranty is up before modding it...or when I just feel like doing it, not like Best Buy will know about it if it gets bricked.

Hope I helped you, these forums aren't too friendly towards this hand held, so getting any sort of help or enthusiasm here is kinda tough.

I used to tinker in alot of these things back when I had a PSP. I'm a little rusty so... You can do whatever a "normal" PSP can do. Custom firmware simply adds/unlocks features. If you're going to rip PSX games, you can start off with:

-A CD ripper. You need the rip to be in bin/cue format. MagicISO is a good and simple choice

-Popstation GUI 3.0 to convert the bin/cue into a PSP EBOOT

-http://popsdb.com/ to change the icon, background, sound etc of the EBOOT in the games menu

This is not even the half process. There's still the matter of getting the custom firmware loaded and and various issues with different firmwares and PSX games. It can be sorted out through the use of Popsloaders but getting that itself is another long process to go through... If I haven't scared you off already, I'll fill you in on the details.

I would like to make a recommendation. If you're going to get CFW, you could either make the stick and battery yourself (and probably brick your psp), or buy premade ones off the internet (for about $25). There is another option, though! Look on a website like craigslist to find people who will mod your psp (and make sure it's legit). I got mine done for $10, and I've never been happier!

I don't do craigslist and I don't really like ebay and amazon.

If you know someone with CFW, they can make the battery for you. Otherwise, your only option is to purchase one from Datel. You can make the magic stick on your computer though. Pandora will also help you recover from bricks so it's worth the investment.

Yes. There's all sorts of stuff about it on the internet. Either buy them or make them yourself. I just recommended having someone else do it so you don't have to go through all the stress of doing it yourself. FYI it was the first time I used craigslist, and I was skeptical, too.

I installed CFW onto my PSP2000 without the use of a PSP1000 to create a Pandora's battery... I gutted my battery and basically severed one of the integrated circuits with a knife. I then replaced the circuit with a graphite pencil. Works like a charm.

(Yes I actually drew a new circuit back onto the chip).

Now, this method is a rather crude method, but it worked for me. Now, you can buy a spare battery to do this operation if you don't want to risk losing a normal battery. If you do buy a spare battery, then you won't need to re-draw the cut circuit. You could keep your pandora as a pandora and use the other battery as a standard PSP battery.

Do I need a Pandora battery?
Only if you have a newer model. Older ("fat") PSPs don't require a PB.
Actually, I think that any psp that you want CFW on needs a PB. I have an original psp, and I needed a PB.
Well... I guess if you'd already upgraded the official firmware to the version that shipped with the slims, then you'd need a PB. Otherwise there should be no need. A "fat" PSP out of the box certainly wouldn't require a PB. Mine didn't anyway.
Ah, got it. That's true, I just assumed that the firmware was already updated officially.
