Well I got my self a PSP the other day and find myself being able to get any of the Final Fantasies, I have never played any of them and wanted to see what the hype was all about Which Final Fantasy, before 7, should I get? Which one is best and why? Feel free to be real opinionated. Im opting out of 7 because Im not a huge fan of the futuristic style of it. I like the medieval themes of the 1 - 6

thank you!

Go for six, it had the best graphics of the pre 7 Final Fantasy games, and maybe people consider it to be the best in the series.

Also Mog, gotta love Mog.

Also it has Mog, and Mog is awesome.

Edit: I did post this before, but it seems my post was eaten, so I'm sorry if this shows up twice.

and it did.

4 and 6 are both great games in their own right.

6 is the best in the series in my own opinion.

4 has a solid story, some very sad parts (who didn't cry when Porom and Palom did their thing in the hallway?). I have a soft spot for 4, it was the first FF I played.

Once you play those, I recommend playing 1 and 2, both were quite strong in their own right, both are fairly unforgiving if you don't level properly though, #2 particularly.

Playing through 3 on my DS right now, having fun with it, not quite as strong as some of the others, but still quite good.

Haven't played 5 yet.

You can get the FFIV collection since it entails the sequel as well as the main game and it's the old FFIV, not the DS remake of it which people dislike cause it was a bit harder than typical.

Beyond that, FFT:War of the lions if you want some more strategy RPG and the least "futuristic" as you put it world in any of them. Seriously, it's like a Shakespearean play lol.

I love IV, start there and then go to VI. Also, Tactics and IX and "futuristic" so you might like those as well...

When I played them I,III and V were basically the same game but just upgraded each time fun in their own way but I wouldnt recommend them.
II is just bad dont bother with it IV has a pretty nice story and characters with an awesome antagonist (apart from at the end) so is definitely worth a look (I havent played the updated version though).
VI is very good with great characters, story and battle system so it is the one I would recommend, In fact out of all the FF games it is still within my top 3.

6 is fantastic. Ive never actually finished it - Im playing it through now (on the PS1)... its so damn good.

4 is really really good too. 3 is pretty good, play it if you've played both those two.

Ive never played 1 or 5, and 2 is terrible. Try it if you like but I got so bored with it.

Also - Crisis Core and Dissidia. Get them. They rock! X)

I downloaded FF9 on my PSP and love it. Totally recommend it. I also bought the UMD of FF2, didn't like it as much.

FF4 is my personal fave and to be honest it's probably the easiest to get in to, not to say it's easy but it is probably the best introduction to the concepts and mechanics of the original (I to X) games. The complete edition of 4 is great with fancy new sprites and comes with it's sequel as well.

Alternativly IX is easily the best of the PS1 era FFs and has some great characters and if you like SRPGs Tactics has the best story of all the FFs.

Whatever you do do not get FF2, while a good game it is the most obscure and hardest of the series and will likely give you a bad first impression. Likewise with FFI it's a good game but very basic and lacks a story.

Uh, apart from having castles and the rise of magic (storywise), FFVI isn't what I'd call medieval. More steampunk than medieval to me. That said, I've only been playing it for a day, and I actually would recommend it. However I'd go for FFIX more, as that is my all-around favorite, and it seems to be a bit more what you're looking for.

This isn't one of the classic Final Fantasies, but Dissidia is great and I hear Dissidia 012 is great as well. A fighting game where all of the characters are from the Final Fantasy games, from I all the way up? Aww yeah. And the battle system is fantasic.

So VI it seems should be the go to with IV pulling in a second place. I also love the tactics style of games, right now Im playing Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together and having a blast so will be buying any FFT that I see first.

I have IX for the Playstation right now, but no playstation. I will keep an eye out for it as well. I think 7 VII is downloaded onto my PSP but I cant play it. Anybody know anything about it?

Thank you all very much! You guys are all awesome!

Out of curiosity, is Terra as incredibly annoying in VI as she is in Dissidia? Because, seriously, what an awful, completely dependent victim. She relies on others so heavily and is such a weak (mentally) person that I don't think I could play a full game with her.
