PSP Go's Future Looks Shaky as More Signs Point to Its Demise

Sony Europe's denials notwithstanding, the future for the PSP Go is looking bleaker and bleaker.

The PSP Go was always something of a non-starter, thanks to factors like a high price tag and no room for physical media, and for many people it was really only a matter of time before Sony pulled the plug. Now, with the emergence of new evidence suggesting Sony is discontinuing the device, it appears that time is at hand.

The original rumors started a few days ago [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109374-Sony-Dodges-PSPgo-Cancellation-Report ], after a Japanese blogger noticed that consumers were no longer able to purchase the PSP Go on the Sony website. The blogger, who also claimed to be a Sony Store employee, said that Sony had confirmed to him that it would not be shipping any more PSP Go stock out. SCE Europe was evasive when asked about these rumors, however, neither confirming or denying them.

"It is a very exciting time for PlayStation portable devices," the company said in a statement. "Before the end of the year we are launching NGP ... In the meantime, the current generation of PSPs continue to be in demand, especially since the introduction of our value for money, Essentials range of games and we will continue to meet that demand."

According to Japanese website Philweb [http://www.phileweb.com/news/hobby/201104/20/679.html] however, SCE Japan is taking a rather different position, and has confirmed that it will not be making any more PSP Goes. What's more, Andrisang [http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/04/20/psp_go_death_official/] notes that the listings for the handheld [http://www.jp.playstation.com/psp/hardware/] on the Japanese PlayStation website have been amended with a small note saying "Shipments Ended" in the bottom left hand corner.

While this seems pretty conclusive evidence, Sony still hasn't formally announced it and made it all nice and official. It seems a bit of a stretch to continue to call this rumor though. We've contacted Sony, and will update if and when someone comes back to us.

Gamer: Die, monster. You don't belong in this world!

PSP Go: It was not by my hand that I am once again, remade. I was called here, by consumers who wish to donwload media.

Gamer: Download media? You steal mens souls and make them your slaves!

PSP Go: Perhaps the same could be said of all video game consoles...

Gamer: Your words are as empty as your UMD drive!

Mankind ill needs a handheld, such as you.

PSP Go: What is a UMD? (tosses UMD disc) A miserable little pile of plastic.

But enough text, have at you!

I have a PSPGo, and personally, I love it more than I did my 2000 series. It suits my needs nicely;

- It's smaller and fits comfortably in my pocket apposed to say a giant brick

- no longer do I need to carry a small stack of UMD's with me if I wanted to play several games

- built in 'pause' function so if I want to listen to music and pick up my game from the exact point i left it at, i can do just that (best feature imo).

- better battery life (not hard to beat 4-5hrs but hey, it beats it)

- In a lot of cases, I've seen better prices on PSN that at my local EB Games.

- Bluetooth PS3 Controller support for those PS1 classic games that require 4 shoulder buttons (dunno if the 3000 does this)

- Built in 16GB HDD, my 2000 only had 1GB and EB wanted 40 bucks for a 10GB stick, FUCK THAT!

Negatives:

- From time to time, I have seen some games at my local EB Games that I will likely never see on PSN (Warhammer 40k: Squad Command, Mega Man Powered Up, Metal Gear Ac!d Series)

- There have been times when new games come out, Peace Walker for example, that have pre-order bonuses like a Big Boss Bandana, I can't get those anymore unless I wanna waste extra money.... Oh, how I wanted that bandana.... :(

- This is something I noticed day one of having a PSPGO; My old one gave me a rough estimate of how much time I had left in the battery (hours:minutes) the GO doesn't give me that information, it just has the 3 bars.

I traded in my 2000 series and 6 games, none of which I bought back, and only spent 15 bucks for a PSPGO. It's been a great investment for me, and while I understand some of the hate towards it; I think it deserves SOME love, its built for people like me.

I just hope Sony realizes why no one bought a PSP Go. And for the NGP they allow at least some kind of physical media, even if it's just a UMD.

What a strange way to word that sentence, it's like he's saying they just discovered money was valuable...

You mean this thing isn't dead yet? I thought it was a failure right out the gate.
