If you go for a DS, and you should, then get a DS lite. You can import games which the new DSi won't let you do.
Regular DS games are not region-locked on the DSi.

The reason he should buy the DS Lite rather than the DSi is so he can play his GBA library, what with his SP not working anymore.

If you still so desire to play your GBA games, it is best and natural to step up to the DS lite as you'll be able to play your old games and more. If that is not a major concern, then simply compile a list of games that interest you for both systems and weigh your decision based on that. Whichever system has the most enticing games should be the one you choose. Both systems have much to offer, and also take into consideration each systems upcoming lineup of games since 09/10 seems to be a good year all around for every gaming platform. In terms of which models you should pick up: DSlite or PSP2000. Both of these systems are relatively the same price (at least where I live) and the best models out of their family. I bolded 2000 on the PSP because it is the best version thus far out of the 3 models.

Ultimately this is all reliant on the big factors: 1)do you wish to continue to play your GBA games? if so then DS lite no questions asked, 2)make a list of games for each and base your choice on which has the more interesting games.

Alright, so I have a few more ideas for games now. But here comes another question, should I purchase a DS Lite or a DSI. I'm probably going to be going with a DS Lite because my SP is broken and I would prefer to play my Gameboy Advance games also. Also, I have a camera and an iPod so the other functions of a DSI seem obsolete to me. What is the difference between the two then though other then the camera? Does the DSI perform better or have other accessories I'm not aware of?

Also, one more question. What happens to the other screen on a DS Lite when I play my Gameboy Advance games? Does it just go black? Or does it somehow use it?

I heard the opposite. You're right about the GBA games ofcourse.

I've heard of two cases of imported DS games not working on a DSi, but also a dozen cases of multiple import games working just fine.

As far as regular DS games go, the DSi plays them exactly the same as the two previous DS versions. However, Nintendo have confirmed that there will be games in the future that utilize DSi-exclusive functions, which will result in the games either having somewhat limited content on the old DS models, or games that are completely DSi-exclusive.

The differences are the following:

Somewhat larger screens
1.5x faster main CPU
4x as much RAM
512 MB built-in storage
GBA slot replaced by SD-card slot
Camera
Improved Wi-Fi functionality for future games
DSiWare (with a portable Virtual Console likely in the future)
Upgradeable firmware
Music playback functionality

While most features don't have much use today, the DSi can look forward to a lot more games where you are able to create your own content, such as "Wario Ware DIY". Personally I'm crossing my fingers for there to be a DS version of "Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII" in the future, since it's a cellphone game that heavily utilized the camera in an interesting way.

The second screen will just be turned off while playing GBA games. The DS's configuration screen lets you choose which screen you want to use for your GBA games.

PSP wins out for me, but it's a close match. Judging by what you've said, you sound like you'd be more at home with DS.

I own both systems and play them both a lot but I always carry my DS with me. I know some see it as "kiddy" it isn't a kiddy system (just has a lot of cash in games for stupid kids, and there is no such thing as a kiddy system if it is made for everyone in mind). I have more DS games and I'm a hard core gamer (not hard core like I play halo 3 online most of the time then a madden game, I mean I play all kinds of games for all kinds of systems ment for different types of people). I prefer the DS out of both, it my not look as nice as the psp but to me if it plays great and I can see what I'm doing I'm fine with it it's a good game. If your in to Action games check out Castlevania, if you like Strategy games try advance wars or fire emblem(also you can play your GBA games) if you like puzzle games get metoes(it's like 12 bucks at Gamestop) if you like RPGs...I have to many to list but there is a lot of good ones out there.

you can get pokemon on your phone... yea it might bring down the plane but its worth it. do it for geodude.

if you want addictive games do DS, if you want games that will last you go PSP

it depends what kind of gamer you are really. personally i think PSPs are more suited to holidays because you can play through it while your away

DS feels like theres not much progress when you play alot of their games.

ah dunno its up to you

I'd get a PSP. Even though it has less games, it doesn't require you to use a damn touch screen or voice commands.

I really hate those features.

So I will give you the opinion of someone that has had a DS from the release date, and a psp only recently. Right now I see very few games coming for DS that are better than some of the older games when the hand held was new. So I recommend the DS if you are willing to dig back a way and look for things like Advance wars dual strike, Elite beat agents, Castlevania Portrait of Ruin, Mario Kart DS, and others that equally good and came out in the same "early system" time frame.

Now for the PsP session. Looks a lot better than DS on some games, but there really isn't that much on the system now in terms of quality. Patapon games are fun, Crisis core is good, Battlefront (though I haven't gotten to play the psp version) I hear is a very nice translation of previous iteration. Even the new Rock Band game is quite fun.

I know I didn't really give you a 1 way argument, but I see positives in both systems. Also Final Fantasy Tactics games are on both systems and I have over 120 hour files on all of them. They are great.

I actually favor the PSP over the DS. Initially I didnt, but that was when I thought the DS was going to be good and that SOny were just trying to hone in on Nintendo's market. But the PSP has alot of fun games, and no touch screen. (I dont liek the touch screen or stylus, as games get tacky with it)
I wish mine did not break. I might get a new one..if I ever get some money. (Im broke ._.)
