As a person who likes games (Remember, don't say Gamer) I have often been bewildered at the fact that people hate the PSP. It's a good system, and while yes it is a bit awkward to hold and long and generally the games on there are back catalog games, I would say that in the best current handheld games, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII takes second with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker taking first. Third goes to The World Ends with You, but that's not the point of this imitation newspost.

Shaun Himmerick, one of the developers of Mortal Kombat has said some rather interesting words which pretty much confirm the existence of the PSP2, no matter how you look at it.

Shaun Himmerick said:
"We're not launching day one on all consoles like that. We are looking at them; we have a PSP2 in the house and we're looking at the engine, like what can it support."
Yes you read that right. No matter how you look at it, Sony has got something up their sleeve.

Now to do the BBC method of news reporting.

Do you have an opinion on this situation? Are you affected? Are you not? Are you a person who stumbled upon this site by accident when looking for the Movie 'The Escapist'?

Tell us all in the comments below. Below Calumon.

Well I look forward to its debut and hope for the best. I love the system to death and a proper upgrade would be welcome as long as it has some good support under it. Certainly won't be a day one purchase if the games aren't up to snuff. I just prey to god it has two things:

Second analog stick (or some variant substitute) to shut up the god damn whiners and it is a rather desired addition.

Backwards compatibility. It can be a UMD drive add on for all I care, I just wanna be able to play my old PSP games along side PSP2 games whenever I want.

I do like the PSP, but the games aren't great and it's always seemed a bit pointless. I don't want to play serious games when I'm on the train or whatever (I've got a GBC with gen 1&2 pokemon games and tetris, thankyou very much). Besides, it's hardly cheap.

I wonder how they imporve it. The only thing i wanted on a PSP is second analog stick. I hope more devs take advantage of the software.

I'm just hoping they don't screw it up like the PSP when they launched.

When the PSP launched they announced UMD, at which point I, and a number of other people thought, "WTF? Why not support Mini-Disc?" - it would have made perfect sense to do Mini-Disc, it's an existing format and would have strengthened Sony's existing MD line. Instead they fractured their market with MD, UMD and their endless versions of MemoryStick, which is now utterly confusing. The next thing everybody thought, because they announced UMD before the actual device was, "WTF? Only one analog stick?" - I was probably among the minority thinking, "Where's the R2 and L2 buttons?"

Right now they're in a catch-22 with UMD. On the one hand, UMD sucks, on the other hand, if they ditch it they lose backwards compatibility, and at this point the PSP2 really needs backwards compatibility. Realistically the best thing they can do is release the entire PSP library for download, strengthening the PSP-Go, and making the rumoured PSP Phone viable. Whether or not they do UMD again, everything needs to be downloadable.

They absolutely need dual analog sticks, and it'd be best if they were actually real, like the NeoGeo Pocket. If they can at all do it, R2 and L2, and finally, SIXAXIS. If they get all that going, every method of input on the PS3 is available on the PSP2. Rumble would be another bonus but would kill the battery.

I think if they do that, and basically have a PS3 in your pocket, minus the graphics, they'll have a hit. If they get a front facing camera to integrate the PS3 Eye as well, and bring in head tracking, even better, and if they can implement a mobile chip based on the cell architecture, so that unified PSP2/PS3 apps can be written, even better.

Other than that, I rather hope they have something hidden up their sleeve, but realistically, the PS2 and PS3 didn't surprise anyone, so I doubt the PSP2 will either, unless it surprises people the same way the PSP did, as in how could it fundamentally suck so bad?

Fingers crossed they release some more casual games for the next psp, I love it to death but I think their biggest mistake is not making more games you can pick up and put down whenever without feeling like you should keep playing.

Patapon, LocoRoco, and Metal Slug anthology would like to have a word with you :p

The system had plenty of casual games, and if ya needed to stop you could just pause and turn the system off. I loved how you could just flip the switch, and then turn the PSP back on and your game would still be there suspended....well not if you completely turned it off.

Interesting.

I love my DS but iv always wanted a PsP because it has a TON of games that i would love.
Especially Fighters.

I just hop they improve the Battery and make the system simpler to use.

Like I said in the news room...

"Just make sure it's 100% backwards compatible.

My old PSP broke, and I've felt the urge to replace it for Valkyria Chronicles 2...But I'd be willing to wait until the PSP 2."

Point 1: Sony, fix the controls. Seriously. Fix the goddamn controls. If you cannot manage this, then you don't deserve to persist in this market. It's that simple.

Point 2: PS2 Library. 3rd Party Support. Whatever you want to call it, find it. Use it.

Point 3: You're still probably going to lose to the 3DS, but I'll see you redeemed if you try even just a little to accomplish points 1 and 2.
