Two analog sticks?!?

Also I wonder if whatever Kojima is going to reveal is actually going to be something other than Metal Gear Solid.

It looks impressive and it certainly has a bag full of nifty tricks, but I don't think Sony is going to get a foothold in the market by creating a console experience on a handheld.

I'm afraid they're going to get left in the dust again by Apple and Nintendo.
lol yeah because Apple really knows how to make a console experience on a handheld. Besides, it's not like the PSP even remotely failed. May not be as high as Nintendo's handhelds, but they're still far from paltry.
Apple's already in the lead for next gen portable gaming with the iPod touch 4G and iPhone 4.

The thing the PSP2 has going for it now is since the 3DS has shit battery life, all they have to do is have 5-6 hours of playtime with 3G and WiFi turned off, and the only real deciding factor will be size. At price they're even OK as the iPod touch 4G is selling at $399. No reason the PSP2 couldn't launch at that price and compare favorably.
Umm.. I have to disagree with you on that one. I have the iphone4, I can safely say "gaming" on it isn't something that can come close to cornering the market on handheld gaming. The 3D games are too tedious to play, and they eat your phone/touch battery life like no other (talking 4 hours if you're lucky and that's on a full charge, so if you plug it in its even more awkward to hold, plus you obviously want to use it for listening to music and calls, and texts too right?) I also don't think selling it at 400$ (More than a PS3) would be wise either. I think 200-250 same as the others is fair. The ipod4G is an enhanced MP3 player. Thats it. It can play games yes, but are you going to? Probably not. The only reason I ever played games on my Iphone (which isn't that often) was when I'd wait in a restaurant for a meal or I'd have LITERALLY nothing else to do.

I think it's pretty sad that it took sony THIS MANY YEARS to add an extra damn ANALOG stick. Thats the only other thing I wanted on the PSP was an extra analog stick. Not a stupid sliding cover, or built in bluetooth, just a damn analog stick and NOW its finally coming out -.-...

But I digress, I think this hand-held has a chance to succeed. Probably won't go past DS sales since most people who have a DS are children (this isn't saying anything to those who own a DS on here, I own 2 myself, its just the gaming demographic of the DS as well as the Wii is the younger generation, lets be honest here, a majority of DS games are made for kids same with Wii.), and those owning a PSP are of an older generation, but there's a younger gen in there as well that play it. So why do I mention this? Because the best way to make sure your product grosses the best is to aim your product at kids. Why? Because kids while whine and complain and their parents will get them one. As opposed to our generation who have to work to earn the money to buy it and can't just go to our parents and say "mom, dad, can I get a PSP2?" ... I can already hear what my parents would say "Why do you want a children's toy? Are you a child? You have college to worry about, go study." -.- Ugh.. sometimes I wish I was a kid again..

Looks good, but I'm not really liking the apparent no-umd thing, and still have yet to see the price. Will have to wait and see before I buy.

It looks really similiar. Wow, touch screen and analogue sticks.... wait, how the fuck are you supposed to use both?

I'm totally uninterested.
I couldn't give a shit for the touch screen; they irritate me often because they require precision, yet my finger isn't as thin as a pencil prick.

I probably won't buy a 3DS, but if I were to choose a handheld, that would be it.
I'm fine with my iPod Touch for handhelds, thanks.

Not really the same thing. DSi added new game options, while PSP-1000 through PSP-Go all had the same options (although the Go was rather like the GB Micro, and fared as well).

I've got a strong feeling the 3DS will end up being like the PS3, outsold by its predecessor for a while.
No, not entirely, the PSPs did tweak things, even playing a PSP1000 vs 3000 you can see quite a bit has changed, though I agree, not as significantly as the DS to warrant an upgrade and miss out on things. 2000 to 3000 was a bit pointless though.
PSP-1000 is the DS Phat
PSP-2000/3000 is the DS Lite
PSPGo sits in a corner by itself

There's nothing like the DSi or DSi XL coming out of Sony, unless you count the Xperia Play.
Well PSPGo is the DSi, PSPGo added all sorts of new features I wished they implented at the beginning in the same way I though DSi should have been refined at the beginning :)
What new features did the Go implement?
Nothing. Well, it had a clock thing and it slid open and closed.

In the traditional sense, yea I'm concerned as well. I don't wanna re-buy all my PSP1 game off the PSN...hell the PSN doesn't even have all the games I got. I only pray that there may be a SKU that comes with a UMD drive, OR sell some sort of UMD drive add-on that you can connect to the device.

Unless they come up with a way of making legal ISOs of your own PSP1 games, that's the only way I see backwards compatibility with UMD possible.

But if there isn't UMD in it, then to hell with it.
Still getting the N3DS over this one first of all.
They're swapping the UMD for a different type of physical media, which sounds a lot better. They have backwards compatibility for downloadable games atleast.

OP: I'm actually really excited about this. Sounds kind of like they mashed together an Iphone and a PS3, which I think would be bloody awesome. Just hope the battery life isn't as ridiculous as the 3DS's.

Actually did the OP not mention it's backwards compatibility?

I did not mention anything of backward compatibility in regards to UMD no, nothing of that sort has been mentioned. But it is pretty much self implied that it can play PSP1 games via downloading them off the PSN. At the show, Capcom showed Monster Hunter 3 portable being played on the device and even using the second stick as a camera control.

I'm happy they are going for a flash based media which can hold more memory, and is most likely cheaper to make. I just wanna know what sort of internal storage this thing will have as well. The Go had 16Gb of storage memory in it, I'd assume the NGP would have some internal storage as well.

In all fairness, I think Sony's decision to put it on PSP2 instead makes sense, adding a new nub to an exisiting PSP would mean developers would start making games using the new nub, so what then happens to those who invested in a PSP at launch? We can't play games because we don't have the extra nub? This is the same exact BS Nintendo pulled with Wii and motion plus. I still haven't bought a motion plus because I don't see the point, pay that price for something that should have been available at lauch, forget you, I'd rather use that money to buy a stack of new games for my PS3.

PS1 did the same thing, much to everyone's annoyance, we had to go out and buy a new controller because all the new games were using the analogue sticks. If Sony has learnt anything over the years its that they shouldn't force people into a transition in order to keep playing a console of choice, all that does is piss people off. I may not have all the features of a PSPGo with 1000, but it still plays and downloads modern games and thats what I bought it for.

The nub may have taken some time to release, but now that I think about it, it will play a more important roll now with the new graphics and all then it would have on the original PSP. FPS games on PSP weren't great, but the console was hardly a commercial failure because of it.

I seriously doubt that so much. Remember having all those features won't generate DS sales. The PSP was a nice piece of kit that technically blew the DS out of the water (I mean graphically the DS was fairly ass for the most part) and it sold about half of what the DS sold. Also Nintendo seem to have overwhelming 3rd party support for their machine.

Plus, 3DS has 3D. What are the chances the same people who bought the DS for the touch screen will buy the 3DS for it's 3D up the ass on every feature available, hmmm?

If you're a betting man I say my money's on the 3DS beating out the NGP by at least 10 million? What say you?

P.S. Why the hell did I quote you twice, I must be losing it... ;)
