There is no way the PSP2 is coming any time soon, as Sony have multiple times promised that it will outlive the DS by several years due to its flexibility as a platform. (Unlike pre-DSi versions of the DS, the PSP has always supported firmware updates.)

But for a possible future release of a next-gen PSP unit, I have to say that getting rid of the optical disc storage medium is a good idea. The disc readers drain the battery and take up a lot of space that could be used for other hardware (or make room for a reduced overall size of the unit), so digital distribution combined with retail games on flash memory wouldn't be a step in the right direction.

I hope I don't have to buy a new psp just to play birth by sleep. If I do then I'll pirate for the first time in my life.
Birth by sleep is for the PSP so you won't have trouble playing it. Given the past few weeks and all the announcements of games I have heard, this hand held is staying.

The source's credibilty is handicapped by the word 'apple'. Everyone's sister and their dog has a DS. Scratch that, the dog is the fucking DS. What console does apple have out? The iphone? That's a phone that plays games, isn't it?

i personally think the whole 'iphone plays games' thing should be brought round back and given a good going over with a baseball bat...
