There is no way the PSP2 is coming any time soon, as Sony have multiple times promised that it will outlive the DS by several years due to its flexibility as a platform. (Unlike pre-DSi versions of the DS, the PSP has always supported firmware updates.)
But for a possible future release of a next-gen PSP unit, I have to say that getting rid of the optical disc storage medium is a good idea. The disc readers drain the battery and take up a lot of space that could be used for other hardware (or make room for a reduced overall size of the unit), so digital distribution combined with retail games on flash memory wouldn't be a step in the right direction.
