In which world did anyone ever speak to people they didn't really know in public situations. In all the years I've travelled on trains, busses and underground I've very rarely struck up a conversation.
PSPs and IPods have merely replaced walkmans, books or newspapers. There's a good reason Sudoku and Crosswords remain popular, because you can idle away hours while not having to talk to what ever misfit is occupying more of your personal space than in any other situation you'd object to.
There's plenty of options for people to get in to their own worlds, there have been for centuries it's just that video games are more accessible, have no boundaries in literacy, language or numeracy and (may) require a lot less intellect or concentration.
