My father was a compulsive liar who used to make "easy money" doing some pretty risque things (that were technically legal, I guess). I have yet to read the biography my mom made of him since he died close to two years after I was born...

My grandfather is one of the hardest family members to keep in contact with on a consistent basis because either it hard to try to get in contact with him (and actually plan out the actual visits themselves) or he'll pop right in unexpectedly without warning just to hang out at a nearby Denny's... although that last part seems to not only run with him but also any of my distant cousins on my mother's side... including the still-living great aunts...

Any of my family members that live in the same area as my 90-year-old great grandmother don't seem to actually take care of her properly and I'm sometimes fear she will die in her own home and no one will know about it until about a day or two later... Luckily, my grandmother always fixes that whenever she does come down to visit me, my mom, and my grandmother... and, as of this year, is making sure that they both call each other up a few times a week just so that my great grandmother has something productive to do as well as to confirm that she's still alive and well...

As far as "psychos" go, I think I take the cake on that... especially when someone tries to get inside my head...

Mother: Ultra-superstitious, believer of black magic. Locked herself in the bedroom when I was 4 and sister was 2, and set herself on fire. I still have graphic memory of the entire facade. She survived (my dad, grandma and uncle broke through the door and took immediate action). Later, mom blamed my dad, aunt and grandma for burning her. Entire family from dad's side was on the run. Grandpa spent a week in jail, and my dad spent 3 months in jail because of it (she prepared a false case, was from a rich background so bribed the cops). We lost our house, our business, everything. They've been divorced ever since. She tries to contact me and my sister, asking to be more involved in our lives. We agreed, we invited her home, and were willing to allow her to come back. My dad, grandad, grandma, all forgave her and we willing to accept her. Only to find out the next day that she called all our neighbours and told weird stories about our family. She's one psycho bi-atch.

Father: Principally narcissist. Married 4 times (the 2nd one is my biological mother), divorced again. Has been unlucky with women, but always put his children and his parents first, probably the reason why women don't stick. Generally, a good business mind and a risk taking appetite, and cares about the family, cousins, is always willing to help out. He deserves much better.

I moved across the country two years ago to get away from my family.

I hate my dad. With a passion. Spent most of my younger years treating my mother like shit and being unemployed. Innocuous, but still not a great dad. Then he developed severe alcoholism in my teens years, and went off the fucking deep end. He got really controlling, and angry. Broke shit in the house regularly. Got into screaming matches with my mother. Picked up a mistress. Overheard him telling her he was glad I was leaving when I announced my cross-country move. He screwed shut all the doors in my grandmother's house (she lives in the in-law apartment attached to the house) after an argument. I caught him in the act of cheating on my mom.

I only recently started fighting back. I took the screws out of my grandmother's door before I went to work one day. He called me during my shift and told me that the screws were in for a reason, and I wasn't to directly disobey him again. I told him to go fuck himself and hung up. He called back and left a message on my voice-mail that he'd torch my car and bash my skull in with a baseball bat if I ever pulled that shit again.

Most recently, I went home for my grandmother's funeral. His mother. He was tame for the first time in a while, and it was kind of nice. Until after the funeral. Then he started drinking again. Started ranting about how people pissed him off. My mom told him to calm down, and he called her a ****. I snapped, told him he didn't get to talk to my mother like that. He told me to shut the fuck up because my opinion didn't matter. I tackled him. Punched him in his stupid fucking face and split his lip open. Told him he was dead to me and walked the fuck out. Had my best friend come pick me up to stay at his place until my plane left. Still had his blood on my face and hands.

Haven't talked to him since. Don't plan to.

Mom said he wants me to be a man and apologize.

Wow I am adopted so I have no idea about my biological family. Adopted family was fine, good people for the most part. They tried their best, most of them never finished High School and their idea of a career was working for the local coal mine for life.

My in laws are mostly good, just petty and love to gossip. I have one person in my family that is off, she will do nice things for you or for my son and then turn around later and throw them in your face. Like I did this and I did that. Is very emotionally stunted romantically. Her husband cheated on her and left her as soon as he got his green card, she was stupid and never got it revoked cause she thought he might come back. He was in the US illegally and basically used her just to get a legal way to stay. She is very negative about marriage and has screamed out the window at people getting married not to do it and to run away. Tried to talk my wife and I out of getting married 7 years ago. Gets violent when you try to talk to her about how she is making mistakes, she hit me once while I was driving and almost caused a wreck. Won't try to find healthy relationships, she was with a married guy for 10 years as his mistress. Once the guy finally got divorced he didn't want her anymore so she became an alcoholic. She is a good person at her core but absolutely refuses to go get professional help for her issues.

I almost stormed out of my Dad's house last week because the ass pissed me off.

Summary: I've wanted to be a game designer for the past 6 years, even with poor math skills. Set my self up for a school with good program, guy at the game design major tells me "it isn't going to happen". So a month before school starts I switched colleges and am probably going for a business or history major. My Dad gave me a lecture on how it was just the guy's "opinion" and how I should "go for my dream". I pretty much said I didn't want to be 22, a college dropout, living with my mother, working a dead end job, and owing 80k. I rather go a safe easy way. He claims he lives a life of regret because he didn't follow his dreams, yet I never have heard him complain about his job once in the 10 years he has worked there, and how he was "let down" by me and angry at my mother for agreeing with me. Downright pissed me off.

I feel in a couple of years I may be just like King Michael and complete cut my Dad out of my life. Guy is a greedy, selfish, asshole that only cares about himself. Bastard will pay for an airline ticket for his new wife and her daughter but won't give his own son gas money after he just turned 16 with no job. He filled my tank and told me "I better have a job by the time it is empty." I understand self reliance, but come on! Jobs just don't fall out of the damn sky, especially for a unskilled 16 year old. The worst thing is, the guy makes over 6 figures so he could easily give me gas money until I got a job but nope, better find a job in a month or no driving.

If you can't tell I kinda just vented a little about my father, maybe not psycho but annoying, asshole, and selfish come to mind. Man, I feel good right now!

Honestly, your Dad is just looking out for your best interests. If it is your dream to be a game designer and you know fully what being a game designer is about, have looked into it and aren't under the impression that you will be sitting in an office coming up with cool ideas for games and/or cool mechanics for games, then go for it. You'll regret not having gone after what you want to do if you end up stuck in a cubical working 9-5 shifts doing boring work that you don't enjoy for the rest of your life. As cliche as it is, life is short and you will spend most of your life working, so you may as well spend your time doing something you are passionate about instead of taking the secure way which ends up being easy, boring, and not fulfilling at all. There is a reason why there is a stereotype about boring jobs where people sit at a desk all day doing work they don't understand.

As for the gas thing, it's not about the money. I am sure your dad could spend all of his cash giving you gas money to drive around to anywhere you want without much of an issue, but there are two reasons that he isn't. 1. In collage, there is no way that you will be driving unless your manage to get a job, and there is a good chance that you won't be able to/want to due to having to focus on school. He is trying to get you use to the fact that you don't get freebies in life away from home. 2. The fact that him giving you money would take away from the lesson in responsibility that he is trying to teach you. While it may be hard for you to get a job and have a company hire you, he is trying to make it so that you are that much more motivated to get the job, meaning that you will most likely do a better job writing your resume and spend more time sending it to as many locations as you can. I'm sure that getting a job is not the first thing that any of us would want to do as teens and that is why he is pushing you so hard.

All and all your father is just trying to get you ready for how things are in the future, and he doesn't want you to end up growing up to be someone who is working a job they hate, or end up with the belief that things will just fall into place for them.

I have to agree with you, I was getting ready to write a similar post when I saw yours. The fact is, life sucks, and it is up to you to make it as bearable as possible. I honestly wish I had a person like your dad in my life when I was younger. I've spent a good deal of my young life faffing about because I didn't have someone to push me when I was younger. Granted my mother always expected me to become a horse trainer (I was a regional grand champion by the time I was 16), but it wasn't something that I wanted for myself. Instead I went out into the world without a sense of work ethics (granted I have other issues that contributed to my situation, but work ethics is a major contributor). I am turning 31 in a week, and I am just now getting close to having my life on track. It took me finding a great girl to get me motivated to stop living day to day.

The best and only solution to truly psychotic, never going to change family members is to cut them completely out of your life. No phone calls, no visits, nothing.

If they come hat in hand you tell them you'll be happy to have a relationship as long as they don't do whatever psycho things bothered you. If they do, bam, cut out again. I have been able to manage some of the less appealing aspects of my familial relations this way.

On vacation a few days ago in Belgium, we went to a chocolate shop. We get a couple boxes but the woman behind the counter forgets to give us one. We realise this a few minutes later and decide to go pick it up but are told by the same woman that she can't give it to us because anyone could claim they didn't get what they paid for. Makes sense to me and I'm about to start trying to reason with her when my stepdad goes into conniptions. He starts causing a scene, yelling and swearing at the woman just because she was following company policies.

I really figured out how xenophobic he was during the same trip. He talked about Muslim people as if they were all terrorists, called women in Burqa's "ninjas", asking why they shop in "regular person's clothes stores" and started yelling about how all Americans are loud, obnoxious, overweight and stupid. He says he wants Justin Beiber to be extradited for showing a bad example of Canadians internationally when he was doing even worse.

I got to talking about politics with him and being a liberal supporter, I was told (read: yelled, "That's a fucking stupid opinion! You can't follow an idealised leader because he doesn't know jack-shit. Wait until you're older and then you'll fucking understand." It's because we were talking about immigration laws.

Let me put it this way, I'm happy I'll be leaving for university again in a couple of weeks. I'll miss my mom, dad, siblings and dogs but I'll be glad I'm gone from him.

Where to begin? Better try to keep this short:

Father - Intense racist and anti-semite, tried to join a branch of the KKK, intense wife beater, child abuser, tried to murder several people, misogynist, neo Nazi, stalker, and I'm two siblings short because of him.

Mother - Married my father knowing he was a horrible PoS because 'she could change him' (in short, no she couldn't), stayed with him for over a decade in spite of all of the above, severely neglected her kids after her second failed marriage, got herself a replacement daughter because her actual daughter no longer blindly followed her and did as she said, made her youngest kids steal from their psycho father as well as lie to several courts/therapists/lawyers, frequently threatened to make her kids live with their psycho father if they didn't do as she said, left her kids to starve so that she could go out on trips and to see concerts, decided one morning to wake her blood daughter (me) by grabbing her by the ankle, throw her against the wall, screaming that if she didn't get a job/enroll in college/enlist in the military within the next two days she would kick her to the street even though she didn't go to college because of the lack of money and because of her (the mother's) frequent admissions to the hospital, and then proceeded to file a false police report to have her institutionalized and left her to rot in there [footnote]If you are wondering why I largely refer to myself in the third person here, it's because it infuriates me to no end, and I'm really trying to not start screaming right now.[/footnote] Also a racist and frequent bible thumper.

Oldest Brother - Childhood dream was to become a garbage man, so make of that what you will. Also racist and a misogynist.

Older Brother - Intense racist and anti-semite, misogynist, frequently beat people up because he could, one time hurling me across the room because he wanted the remote (this was not the sole time he abused me by far).

Younger Brother - Piss poor temper, beat anything up that moved (or didn't), tried to kill me on at least three separate occasions.

I've ceased talking to three of them, the other two I've had almost no contact with in the past two years. It's a wonder I haven't gone utterly mad, and no surprise that my nightmares are largely of them. But, I have my boyfriend now, and he keeps me human, and things would be perfect if I had my kitty (my brother isn't likely gonna give him back to me if I ever could have him), finances weren't a problem, and if the smelly roomies were gone.

My family is very dysfunctional. We had domestic violence for a very long time, but it's mostly gone now. We still have a lot of family feuds with our extended family. When articular members see each other, it turns into an all out bitchfest and who flips the table first is anyone's guess.

I would say that our faith alone is what prevented my family from being completely torn apart. Because there was nothing else to stay for.

My brother became mentally unstable at around age 15, though my mom would tell you he always had some issues, they just became full blown psychosis at around 15ish. He developed a drug habit, which aggravated his bi-polar/schizophrenia into a full blown madness. He frequently would go off for weeks or months on various "adventures" which would usually end with us getting a call late at night from the cops in some random state/city, telling us they'd picked up my brother acting crazy in the streets. We'd go fetch him, bring him home, he'd go into a mental facility for treatment, then get released (wonderful revolving door mental health institution we have). Then he'd do it again because he would go and "find god" on the tv evangelist's shows. This would make him think he was healed and didn't need to take his medication, and *gasp, shock* he'd go crazy again and do something else.

This went on for about 20 years, with various bouts of violence, including a time when he tried to strangle my mother, and kick my father's chest in. Since then he's been in a state mental facility for the criminally insane, and likely won't ever get out.

For me, I'd have to say my dad's friend -- not blood related, because everyone in my family is in good mental health. (Except my cousin -- he was born with a trisomy, and is labeled as heavily autistic. Eleven years old, haven't heard him speak a sentence in English and still uses diapers.) He's one of those religious people who believe the end of the world is coming in a short amount of time, and that the masses of the world are ignoring the religious aspect that they are enlightened to see.

Not psychotic at all, nowhere near it. He's a legitimately good guy, but I don't think his mentality is quite there when he believes that the end of the world is soon. He's still otherwise down to Earth and I don't think he needs much help beside some self-evaluation.

He also married a woman a few weeks ago. They never met until the wedding. (Apparently they had spoken a few times on an 'end of the world' podcast). Super nice new wife he has, so I've got a good hopes for him.

Now the second one I can respond to in full. The reason it pissed me off was he just gave me a month to find a job. If he would have said "Hey as long as you are actually making an effort to find a job then I will help you". I understand perfectly that nothing falls into your hands. I paid for every piece of tech I own. My TV, PS3, Laptop, DS, and iphone by working my last two years of high school. I wanted a job so bad as soon as I could drive, because I wanted all of this stuff. I'm now planning on attending college and working, while paying for my own gas money on a daily 50 minute drive. The funny thing is, I moved into my mother's before I ran out of gas and she gave me gas money until I got a job. So I needed no help in learning responsibility of money. When I was planning on moving away for college, I would be paying for everything I needed, which I had plenty of money saved up in the bank for. Maybe it's because my older sister is bad with money he thinks I must be too.

Didn't want endless gas money, I just wanted him to at least help me until I found a job. The first day I had my license I applied to about five or so places in the nearest town, I called all of those places to follow up, not a single interview. So I wanted a job, I just didn't know how long it was going to take.

I won't go into further detail for the first issue, little to personal family issues.
