Zetman, Akumetsu, the like are truly great thought out manga that kept me reading to the end. They just blew the whole bang punch bam shoom idea of shounen anime in the head. Any others come to mind?

Oddly enough Ookami to Koushinryou (Wolf and Spice). Honestly when anyone says anything about anime I can pretty much always reply with this because its that awesome but yeah.

Psychologically thrilling in the sense that I was glued to my computer because I had to know how he was going to turn a profit! Its like Death Note with less mind games and more merchant trickery.

Also Evangelion really likes to creep up behind you while you're distracted by the big robots fighting then proceed to fuck you in the head.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles has some action, but its more focused around the plot that you unfold as you read. Satan 666 is a great one.

Wolf and Spice ain't shounen. It's amazing, yeah, but not shounen.

The problem with straight "shounen" is that they tend not to be heavy on the thinking, as they are intended for a younger audience. Seinen, on the other hand..

My favorite would be Ergo Proxy. It fucks with your head AND has great fight scenes! Seriously, Proxy of Death is a badass.

There's such a thing as psychological and thought provoking shounen? The two almost seem mutually exclusive. I know Death Note ran in Shounen Jump but I wouldn't even really consider that for kids.

I see shounen as being cartoony and joyous in spirit like One Piece and Seinen being everything else really. I can't really see any shounen anime/manga being really all that thought provoking thought since they're all about good going to go kick evils ass, then almost losing to evil, then pulling a new hidden power out of their ass at the last minute.

Zetman nor Akumetsu are Shounen manga. As MisterShine noted, there's a distinct difference between Shounen and Seinen. Shounen's more geared towards young males (children / teens) while Seinen is directed towards young adults / older men.

And Ergo Proxy is indeed awesome. That last episode was just...unspeakably awesome.

And I +1 to Spice and Wolf not being Shounen. It's definitely Seinen, as it deals with more political and financial situations rather than action, guns, and ninja fights.

Tsubasa's story is terrible. Do not recommend. Do not waste your time reading 300 chapters with a time-consuming needlessly confusing plot.

Evangelion is epic, epicwise.

First thing that comes to mind with "Psychologically Shounen" is "Alive - The Final Evolution". It fulfils many of the Shounen archetypes and at the same time, surpasses them into the Seinen realm by provoking philosophical ideas. Very compelling and interesting - Do Recommend.

If you liked Zetman and Akumetsu, I'd suggest Wolf Guy - Wolfen Crest (same mangaka of Akumetsu) and Parasyte (won the Kodansha award in 1993). Parasyte is awesome and definitely deserves a read. Full of action sequences yet makes you think deeply. Do Recommend.

EDIT: Death Note is indeed Shounen, but should've been categorized as Seinen IMO.
