First of all, i would like to say, is that at first i searched for an older topic that i know someone opened with the exact same subject, but i could not find it. So, if someone can find it and provide a link, then i'll thank that user and apologise for opening a topic without searching enough first.

So, what's this all about? Well, i've decided to go to a psychologist (my reasons are not relevant to this thread), and i would like to ask my fellow escapists, for some advice. If you've been to one, what can i expect, what's it like, what should i do, etc. Thanks!

Psychologist or psychiatrist?

Either way, as far as I'm concerned if you're lucid enough to decide you need a head doctor you're clear enough to work out the roots of your own problems and plot a course of action.

Whether or not you'll have toe fortitude to pull yourself out of your self-imposed spiral of declination is another matter, mind you.

Then pray tell, what is it they do? As far as the name conveys they're just about to tell me my psychological makeup. Which I can do myself.

They're Psychiatrists that can't give you meds.
So there's really no point.

There's a chance psychologists are more effective than psychiatrists, because a psychiatrist will just give you meds to shut you up and make it seem like you're getting help (this is not directed to people with conditions that actually require medication, but in general, psychiatrists prescribe way more than they need to), and so a psychologist is forced to do talk therapy with you.

In general, they're a difficult bunch to talk to. Once you get going with the spilling your life's secrets, it's all right, but if you're introverted like me, you're going to have a hard time... they're not easy to connect with on a human level.

Luckily I can spill quite easily to complete strangers. Unluckily all my recent problems have a single root cause which I have no hope of resolving.

Psychiatrists have *less* psychological training than a psychologist. Yes, they can prescribe meds, because they spent more time in med school instead. Now, if you don't believe in modern psychological methods, this may not matter to you, but for someone seeking that out, it's a fairly big difference.

YAY LET'S FIX EVERYTHING WITH PILLS!

Nevermind the 3 years of undergrad, two years to get a masters and 3-10 years for the doctorate. No, let's just throw a bunch of pills at the patient. That'll fix you right up.

First, there are a lot of different modern psychological approaches, so it may be worth spending some time researching what's out there to see what appeals to you. What you won't run into is the "sitting on a couch talking about your mother" approach (ye 'olde Freudian), unless you very specifically seek that out, since it's essentially discredited these days.

Here's a brief list [http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/content/therapy_methods.html] of the major modern techniques, and what you might expect from each (though obviously not every technique is applicable to a single adult). Pick one that seems compatible with your viewpoint and then find a psychologist who is comfortable working with that (many psychologists are competent and capable with using multiple techniques).

Further, ignore 80% of the posters in this thread. There's nothing shameful or pointless about visiting a psychologist. Whatever issue you are dealing with, it's a good sign that you are taking serious, positive change into consideration. Sure, a psychologist won't give you any "magic bullets", and in the end all of the changes that might come about in your life will be entirely driven by YOU, not the psychologist.

I can figure out my taxes all by myself too, but that doesn't stop me from using accounting software and occasionally a tax lawyer to work through particularly thorny problems. A second opinion is almost always a valuable thing.

Lastly, if your first psychologist doesn't work out, don't be afraid to look around and try others. It may be that it simply isn't for you no matter who you see, but don't give up entirely just because your first psychologist/technique doesn't mesh well with you. It's not uncommon.

Like i said, i am going to see a psychologist, not a psychiatrist, and yes, i know the difference.

@nezroy: thanks, the link was interesting too.

Well, hope this thing will bring some clarity to some issues.
