I was signed up for Psychonauts as soon as I saw the box on the shelf at EB Games and discovered that it was by the same guy responsible for Monkey Island and Grim Fandango. I pre-ordered ot for my XBox on the spot.

Believe it or not, gamers were buying and playing games before Yahtzee Croshaw started telling us what to think.

I had intended to buy Psychonauts for years but could never find it in a store (stores where I live are frankly a bit crap). Then after I very recently worked out how to use PayPal, I saw Psychonauts on Steam for 1/2 price over xmas and bought it.

To be honest, I'm not that impressed with it. It's not bad - the sense of humour is great and the whole thing is very imaginative, but I just expected... something more, in the actual gameplay department. I guess platformers bore me even when they're done well. But then I think Crysis is a bunch of stinky rat poo so don't listen to me.

I didn't buy it because of Yahtzee's review... it'd been on my "watch for" list since the back-compat update that made it runnable on the 360. I didn't find a copy in the used-game places around here before it came out on the XBox Originals, so I downloaded it.

Tons of fun, even if it was the game upon which my XBox360 decided to "Red Ring". (Fortunately *after* finishing it... while I was replaying through to get some good gamesaves to show off some of the levels to folks.)

Played it. The only two gripes I had were the controls and the Bullfight zone.

Other than that, it rocks.

and yes I did get the game.

I'm surprised no one has said this yet.

"I am the milkman. My milk is delicious."

I literally laughed out loud at that line.

No, fair points. Indeed the gaming elements of Psychonauts are only slightly different, but not enough. However, I still like this.

Psychonauts could get away with this because a.) the dialog was funny and story was an original spin b.) the game allowed some good exploration elements, which I love in these kinds of games and c.) excellent art design.

But I can see if this isn't enough for you, it won't please you enough.

I agree with Crysis. I'm a big fan of Farcry. It's one of the only FPS games I've been willing to complete more than once (and it's not exactly a short game) but this couldn't stop me thinking all the 'improvements' on Crysis weren't good enough.

I'm surprised no one has said this yet.

How about the one with the rolling pin that says.(when you are inside with your rolling pin)

"I need prescription medicine to get through the day".

Then says

"You better not steal my husband, tramp".

"When my husband gets home after having too many drinks, I will hit him with this rolling pin, but we will still love each other."

"Feces."

"Over time, my husband will desire me less sexually but he will still love my pies." I nearly peed myself after that line... and yet it's so appropriate to the level's send-up of '50s suburbia.

Actually, I'm pondering writing up an article or paper on the themes and character threads in Psychonauts; there's so much going on in that story that you can miss on a casual play-through. For instance, the reason for Sacha's obsession with control of his mind is revealed in one of the "View-Master(tm)" slideshows from his memory vaults... which also shows why Milla's attraction to Sacha (also revealed in a vault) is (so far) unrequited.

Yes, I'm a dirty, dirty tease.

I was actually thinking about contributing to the upcoming humor issue of the Escapist with an article on Psychonauts.

I bought Psychonauts within the week it first came out where I live. It was, and still is, one of my favorite games of all time. Not because of the gameplay (I can hardly remember the puzzles or the platforming), but because of the art direction and the story. I will never forget the Milkman level.

I am the Milkman. My milk is delicious.

it seems alot of people on the forum are playing "psychonauts" (which is great, don't get me wrong) but is it because of yahtzee's review? the game's been out for like three years.
just out of curiosity. i'm not trying to give people shit or anything...just wondering
I actually found the demo when it first came out, played through the whole demo a couple times and then couldn't find it in stores, I bought it as soon as I found out it was released on steam.
