No, not really. The only games I can think of that I did that with were Majora's Mask, Fable 1 and Monster Hunter. I guess if you count the back of the box too then Morrowind would be added to that list. But apart from that I always find out more before I buy. Before the internet it was through friends or magazines. But as was already mentioned, most box art is pretty bad so you can't really judge a game by it anyway.

MirrorMask comes to mind.
Less about the visuals (although they are intriguing) and more about what it says as it has Dave McKean, Neil Gaiman, and Jim Henson Company written in particularly large letters. Someone did recommend the movie to me beforehand, but the reason I pulled the trigger on buying it outright were those names. xD
It also helps that Stephanie Leonidas is very very easy on the eye, right?

But really, the only purchase I've made based almost entirely on Cover Art was X Blades.

Was it worth it? Hmmm, let me think...

Never done it with a game, but do it with movies and music all the time!

All ove those covers intrigued me when I saw them... And it's true, most of them I found through reccomendations on Amazon, but those were the ones that cought my eye, and bought without hearing anything my them first!

I choose my pornography almost entirely based on the cover art.
And now Dead Rising is my favorite video game series and Frank West my favorite protagonist in a game. Funny how things like that work out, huh?

Couldn't have said it better myself, so I won't ... merely to add: if you have a picture of someone beating zombies over the head with a TV, that means that I will almost certainly buy your product.

Not to question your way of choosing music but I am curious: How does that work?

With games/movies, the visuals can inform you about the media in question (or look at the back of the box worst case) but I'm not sure how the visuals for an album would inform you about the music in question (unless there is a cowboy hat involved; then you can probably assume country :). How often does that actually work out or do you just happen to enjoy any type of genre?

Can't say that I ever did. I always try to research everything as best as I can before buying.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, and with many other anime-style video games tend to be chosen at whim during a walk through gamestop. Granted, I will read the back to get a general idea of what to expect. But with TotW:RM I really kind of just picked it up and bought it, and it was wonderful, and introduced me to my now favorite video game series, the Tales of Series.
Edit: Oh, and here's a picture.

Uh...TWEWY for one. I was choosing games to buy and I saw it and the Squeenix logo so I decided to go for it.

And it didn't fail to please.
That and Borderlands, which was also amazing. My two favorite games, and one is getting a sequel.

Secondhand, mind.

Also:

It looked like a game about vampire schoolkids, like a more hardcore Harry Potter, or School Bites.

You'd be surprised! It's actually quite spot on!
I have over 500 cd's, and my iPod has over 110 gigs of music on, and the taste varies across the entire spectrum... I actually think it would be impossible for someone to not find something they like on there! :p

All the album covers I posted are chillout/shoegazer/post-rock and chillstep albums! They all have photo's that look old, or retro, and a kinda beige tinge to them, or are slightly blurred... or they are pictures of industrial urban scenes at night... or a bright abstract scene! They follow certain themes, and conventions, and they actually give a slight feel for how the album is going to be... it's rarely much different than expected! :p

As I said, they caught my eye as covers, and the only other information I found about them before purchase was the band name and album title... I then look up reviews and stuff after I have made up my own mind! :p

Just for laughs, here is a review I made when drunk once... :p

9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors. Granted I got it as a gift, but I wanted to buy it from the moment I saw it, and I never looked up anything about it beforehand So I guess it counts.

I once purchased Borderlands on day one based entirely on its cover art. Knew very little about the game before that, but the cover art looked awesome, the back screenshots looked amazing, and the game looked colourful and fun. One of the best buys I've ever made! Now I can't wait to be able to play the sequel, which, for the record, seems to have even better cover art :D

I like how the guy has two hands up this time, I thought that was quite clever.

I've never bought anything based on the cover but I would have bought Resistance: Fall of Man based on its cover art.

I don't think i've ever bought anything based purely on the cover art of it. It does help though when the cover art is good and if what i'm actually buying is good too.

I'm really picky about the quality of things I own so I hate bad cover art for things I like though.
