Unless the pieces come alive and beat the crap out of each other (Battle Chess!) I just don't care.
Ninja-ed.... Seconded, Battle Chess remake ftw.
Edit: Already on the way. From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Chess
"A new version of Battle Chess is currently in development by Subdued Software via a license from Interplay Entertainment. It is set for a release date of Summer 2011 for the PC and iPad/iPhone."
Now will just have to wait and see if they turn it into an FPS as they seem to be doing with most franchise remakes....
Hmm. My friend once showed me a game a long, long time ago... It had pretty bad graphics, and I know from reading the wikipedia entry that it isn't battle chess.
However, it was intriguing.
Although set up like a chess game, your king was in fact a wizard, and every time you 'took' a piece, there was a real-time battle.
So far that doesn't sound much different to an animated chess game...
But the battle determined which piece was lost. Which meant that you could, (and frequently did) remove the attacking piece, which obviously would never happen in a game of chess.
And, the king being a wizard had as a result that instead of moving a piece you could choose to cast a spell. (With effects such as teleporting a piece, or destroying something... or the like.)
It's sort of like what you'd imagine if you merged chess with some RTS and RPG elements.
I wish I knew what it was...
