I have an urge sometimes. It comes and goes, peaks and troughs, but it's always there - an unfulfilled dream I must accomplish, a hunger I must sate. I know I'm not the only one here, so you can all just leave exit the closet with me. When I'm presented with a robust face editor I just have to try make myself. Mass Effect was particularly tempting.

The problem is, I'm crap. I can't make my face worth a damn. Perhaps my mug is a piece of serendipity only God could manage, and no man-made editor, no matter how many extra noses, can match the exquisite ecstasy that is my visage. Or, more likely, perhaps I just have no talent for this thing. Who knows?

So who does it too and how good are you?

I actually never try to make myself, with few exceptions. For most games, I'll resort to attempting to make one of the many OCs I have.

I never really think about that. I usually just go with the default character. I want to play the game, not spend nine hours in the face creation menu.

Oh yeah, I always try and make myself. Much for the reasons you cite, except I have the skill.

I can never get enough scars on any of the editors.
And I can never get to the right level of paleness.
I try to get as close as possible but I never try to actually make myself.

The skill to match His creation in the digital realm? Truly you are the GaMessiah. (Hehe, it sounds like Gay Messiah...I'm feeling really childish today.)

PS: Can I be your first disciple? I promise I won't go all Judas on you.

i'd have to say that Bethesda has never created a face modifier that actually allows you to make human faces. And, as for Mass Effect... well... i hardly noticed any difference in the face from one extreme setting to another. it basically lets you pick between ruggedly handsome and ruggedly ugly. and the women all look like various forms of Sigourney Weaver.

i've tried. and failed. every. single. time.

Even though I'm pretty distinctive looking (read: 100% pure ethnic French and it shows), I can never seem to capture my features in a character-creation mode.

I used to on wrestling games, but it's hard to get it anywhere near.

I try my best to make myself in a game, but it just ends up being a modest variation of the basic white dude preset with brown hair and blue eyes.

Normally with stuble, as well. Because stuble is awesome.

I make the most outlandish charecter possible. In the firs Saints Row i made a giant tomato man with purple hair, green eyebrows and a white beard. I think it's fun to run around looking like an idiot

Woo! Disciple! Have your complimentary pack of cookies, milk, and assorted ducks and get to spreading the word!

Nah, seriously though, I spend ages tweaking, but some games just don't like the mixed-race main characters. Mass effect, for example, was impossible. Didn't have my hair. I mean come on, which game doesn't have my hair!? Gawd.

I've tried a few times, but I generally give up pretty quickly because I know the sad fact is that I could spend the rest of my life dicking around with sliders and I'd never get it to look like me.

The human brain has extremely advanced facial recognition "software," we need this because of the great variety of facial features, but this is a big problem for people trying to virtually recreate faces. It is only recently that digitally created faces became so realistic that it was actually hard to tell them from real faces. And, because of the great variety of possible facial features it is highly improbable that anyone would ever be able to realistically recreate themselves with the limited number of sliders provided.

Anyone who can realistically recreate themselves in Fallout 3 or Mass Effect or Oblivion or whatever is the exception to the rule.

I think there was a game that used a camera to make a face for you?

I usually just make a generic blond person.

The shoddy hair was pretty bad. Also, eye shapes. I've never seen so many wasted slots that no one would choose because they look ridiculous. And to top it off, there were so many hair types they could have done that might have approximated mine. What game doesn't have 'lazy but moderately well-kept' as an option but has '80s drawn-back widow's peak'?

I sometimes make characters that have some of the same features of myself (the sexy ones, of course); blue eyes, blonde hair, tall and slim, with massive masculine muscles that could beat the crap out of any... actually I'm pretty weedy.

But I don't try to make them look like me, because, well... I don't think a computerized image could express my handsomeness. Either that or I'd rather make someone more attractive than myself.

You can decide which one you want to believe.

I can see what you're saying here. I've got a friend who, after an hour or so with the ME sliders, made a dead ringer for what he'd look like in about 10-15 years. Ever since then I just know I can do something that approximates me. Or maybe I just hope.
