I've been hearing this phrase for as long as I can remember. One day I looked at it and thought about it. Owning noobs? People take pride in owning noobs? They think that defeating newbies/unskilled players is something to brag about?
Think about it...
Why not "I pwn pros" or "let's go pwn some of those pros"
What do you think?

I think they're using 'noob' to describe everyone that they can kill. It makes them feel superior.

It's to prove their dominance.
Show the others they are the alpha male of the group. Or basically what UnkeptBiscuit said.

It's always fun when you are a noob to kick that guys ass though. The feeling you get when you kill them is very satisfying. Well, it was for me when I got singled out in my first ever Halo 3 match.

I don't even know, to be honest, whenever I kill an unskilled player I always feel guilty for it.

'pwning noobs' as I understood it is a way of further denigrating the players you have eliminated, by implying that their skills are so far below your own that despite however many hours of playtime they have built up, they are still as noobs to your ubermensch ways.

It's yet another way of trying to assert that your metaphorical cock is larger than anyone else's, rather than actually referring to the defeating of new players, which is assumed to be something trivially easy.

Makes me sick it does. I take joy in beating whoever I'm playing in a fair fight, not ganging up on weaker players or acting like it actually matters one bit in real life.
Are you implying that my 'I eat noobs' t-shirt with the picture of godzilla eating some dude is not incredibly humorous is every way concievable by mankind?

It's basically fueling your Ego. To them "Noobs"[footnote]One who has had the game for a decent amount of time but lacks skill. Not to be confused with Newb[/footnote] are the enemy, to "Pwn" [footnote]Kill one in a fashion that is deemed cool or "Epic"[/footnote]one is to thin the herd and to obtain an easy kill.

Still, it's always better to be the underdog who defeats the Master.

I hate the word "noob". Only came about because Americans can't pronounce "new" properly (no, I don't hate Americans).

OT: Pretty sure, like others have said, its used simply as a derogatory insult; anyone you can kill must be a "noob". But...if the only people they can kill are noobs, they can't be very good at the game themselves...oh the circular quandary!

Err, as for "pwning pros" - I fear people may misunderstand that as advocating violence against hookers :p

as far as noobs and pros go...

Noobs you hunt for quantity and pros for quality.

By the third harvest of a noob player, I tend to feel like a bully and leave them alone...

Ack! I have been pwned.

I'll get you next time, Daystar!

I agree with your original post. The whole 'pwning noobs' mentality is fine if your not taking yourself too seriously. It's when the 'hardcore douche bag pwners' come along and act as if everything they've ever killed, ever, was a noob or some other derrogative jargon these damn kids use.

If they aren't weaker, then you won't win unless you have an unfair advantage. You can't Pwn a Pro unless the Pro isn't Pro or you're not in a a fair match. Beating a equal opponent isn't possible because whoever is winning is either "Noob Pwning" or they're taking advantage of bad luck, lag, or damage from other players.

In short, if you can kill them they're worse then you, so you're "Noob Pwning".

^Quote of the day right there.

I've also heard "Ganking lowbies". I Admit i know nothing of WoW (MMO's are not my style) but doesn't that mean the same thing?

On the whole "Everyone's a noob compared to me" side of the coin it makes sense. But come on, that's like bragging cus you beat a 4 year old in a fist-fight.

Right there is all you need to know about the '733t'. They are insecure people who unfortunately can be good at games. How this helps them in their life is beyond me. But there are a lot gamers out there, if you're not playing with some you like, ditch 'em, move on....
