Most of you have probably noticed some of the holiday discount deals going on here and there. And by 'here and there' I mean 'Steam and Direct2Drive'. Steam has got a 5-day one-day-only [http://store.steampowered.com/early-holiday] sale, and D2D has their All killer, no filler [http://www.direct2drive.co.uk/holiday/] discounts on six games. GTA 4 is one of them, and ten pounds seems like a very nice price for it, but I'm wondering whether or not it's my sort of game.

The last games I played (and enjoyed) were Borderlands, STALKER: SoC, Prototype, Crysis, Mass Effect and Fallout 3. I haven't played any of the GTA games before. So tell me: What does GTA hold for me?

While it's a good game, with the games you played? Not the one to buy at full price. But £10? Yes buy it.

A: Let me think. GTA 4 has a good physics engine, a nice open world, and dramatic storyline. Since you liked Stalker, Borderlands and Fallout, you'll probably enjoy the graphics.

On the other hand, it's not as adventurous as Mass Effect, and Niko is much less godlike than Alex Mercer. But i suppose you'll like it anyway.

If you liked Stalker or Fallout 3,I think you'd like GTA 4,especially at a discount.
But I agree with Broady Brio,It's not a game to buy at full price with the games you like.

San Andreas was too immature. It reminded me too much of a 10 year old saying things he heard his mother and father say, with loads of, "Yo nigga!" and gang violence.
I agree. GTA 4 is much more reserved (up to a degree), and is a more mature game. And its really good, I'd say go for it, its a great game.

You could buy it, but compared to it's predecessors it's just not as good.

I'd only buy it if Graphics are a factor.

GTA has very little in relation to games like Borderlands, Prototype, and Mass Effect. But if you liked blowing off righteous or un-righteous heads in Fallout, and felt the need for more prostitution, GTA is probably for you.

On a more serious note, if you've played Crackdown and enjoyed that, then absolutely go for GTA. They share a developer or something like that, so the gameplay is similar.

It depends on if you're going to come back here right after you buy it and ***** about how it's not like the other games.

Yes it's awesome as hell but just don't expect it to be anything like San Andreas.

If you're looking for a realistic sandbox game with a "Scorsese-esque" story and decent multiplayer: Get GTAIV

If you're looking for sandbox game that's just plain fun: Get San Andreas or (better) Saint's Row 2.

EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, I thought SR2's story was waaay better than GTAIV's. The characters were more interesting (and over the top) and the set pieces felt more original (and more over the top), while GTA IV just felt like a gangster movie rundown with car chases and double crosses up the ass.

It was my introduction to the GTAIV series, and I've loved pretty much every game that you mentioned other than Prototype (which I've never played), so you may or may not love it as much as I did.

Do you like semi-realistic titles with excellent stories and painstakingly excellent characters?

You'll like GTA 4.

Truth be told, you will probably enjoy GTA 4 more if you haven't played any of the previous titles.

Judging by the games you have played already you will probably enjoy GTA 4.

I've gone off GTA4 a little. When I first got it, I thought it was amazing, but playing the Gay Tony pack it seems more and more like the sort of "jack of all trades" sandbox experience that critics of these types of games so often go on about. I.e., it's good at everything, but not fantastic at any single aspect of gamepley.
I'd say there's more depth and -how to put it?- precision to games like Fallout 3 and Mass Effect. But for a tenner? Yeas, it's still well worth it.
