How do I set my quadcore processor to only use a single core?
Wait... Why would you want to do that? You'd be quartering your processing power.

It will use only a single core if that is all that is necessary. If it requires the use of a second core it will use a second core... and so on and so forth - you get the picture.

Well then Hearts of Iron 3 obviously requires more than one core to run smoothly. Why do you want to only use one core anyway?

I have 4 cores as you could've noticed from my OP and it is FACT that the game runs smoother on OLDER MACHINES that have SINGLE CORE and there are messages that say people used a program of sorts to only use one core and it ran smoothly, rather than it being unplayable for 4 minutes and then 8 ingame hours pass (which is 8 seconds normally)..

you can set a process to use only one core, by doing a ctrl+shift+esc to get to the task manager, right-click on the process, select core affinity or whatever it is, check only one core is checked. I had to do this, for example, for Thief to work on a quad-core (that game does NOT like multiple cores, it crashes after a few minutes)

you'll have to do this every time you start the process, though.

if you can find a file called imagecfg.exe, you can follow these instructions [http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=187768] to permanently modify the exe to only use one core

Look here

http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-616-multicore-cpu-how-to-disable-a-core#procedure-when-using-windows

What OS are you running? In Vista, I had to click on the 'boot' submenu, then advanced options.

two ways to fix this problem:

1. if you have an nvidia card... install the latest drivers. In the nvidia control panel, under advanced 3d settings, set threading from auto to OFF.

2. or after you start the game, ctrl+alt+delete, bring up the task manager, right click the program, click go to process, right click the process and click Set affinity. Deselect all but CPU 0. That will FORCE the application to only run on one core.

Yeah, probably ignore mine. The Task Manager approach should work better, less permanent and only affects one program at a time.

I'm gonna have to jump in here and ask you if you really think that a quad-core processor basically improves the processing speed by x4, because it doesn't. IE: a quad-core 2ghz processor does NOT run at 8ghz

just clearing that up

I'm not some computational meta-mind, I have no idea how these things work.
My question was more along the lines of just 'why would you do that?'

I assumed he just wanted his PC to run quieter, but I had to be sure.

some old software (old games are most affected) is not designed to handle multi-core processors, and runs unpredictably when it tries to use more than one core. from what I can see, it's mainly a problem with some old games (Thief, like I said earlier), and causes crashes.

as far as I've read, the cores on a multi-core processor do not necessarily run synchronized, which messes up the timing information (games need accurate timing info, otherwise they crash or cause other glitches).

now, as for why Heart of Iron 3 appears to need only one core, now that is interesting

edit: ooh, I've found something interesting about game timing and multicore processors [http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb173458(VS.85).aspx]. don't need to read it, it's just an interesting aside.
