Quake 4 is just about they only game I have on this computer. Which is sad because I hate it. No that's a bit harsh. I moreso greatly dislike it. The story involves human space marines dying in service to Mother Ru-Earth. BUT as you'll notice, the marines are either: Asian with an American accent, Black with an American accent, White with an American accent, or White with a Russian accent. I don't know if those are the only countries that exist in the new world but that's all there is. Now these brave space marines are fighting a war against the aliens Strogg on their home planet of Stroganoff...Stroggos. You play as Matthew Kane, a supposedly regular man with a gun. Your team mates all seem to be a higher rank than you, even though their rank is displayed when you point your crosshair at them. But YOU can't order them around. Which on second thought is probably a good thing. They aren't very good when it comes to combat. Usually, running in front of your gun while you're shooting is their favourite trick. Unfortunately, you can't shoot friendlies, which means whenever they run infront of you, you stop shooting all together, meaning you have to strafe to the direction they came from and press the mouse again to resume the gunfire. You get the standard weaponry from the previous games, thankfully no longer pixelated to the point where it looks like Lego has been made into a gun and they don't make the "pew pew pew pew pew" noise from the second. (I never played the third so leave me alone). There's the piss-weak pistol that you only use at the very start of the game. The assault rifle with built in sniper scope. The shotgun (later on you get a modification that lets you use the "magazine" reloading system and not the "shell by shell"). The rocket launcher and so on.
The boss-fights are pretty fun...okay they're occupying. Basically all you do is shoot until they die. It's not like the Max Payne 2 where you have to think about shooting the little orange things in the roof. There is no strategy in the Quake 4 boss fights. You pull out your strongest gun and fire away. When that runs out, the game switches to your NEXT strongest weapon. The final boss is an exception. You defeat the first dude (twice) then blow up a brain thing. I dunno...I zoned out coz I was shooting the brains minions to see if they come back. They do. AAAANYWAY there is a sequence in the game where Kane awakens in a medical laboratory strapped to a bed, on a conveyor belt. You are moved through various machines that gradually "Stroggify" you. Then the rest of your squad comes and saves you, THE MOMENT before you are fully Strogg. The sequence is REALLY well done and fun enough for me to quit before it ends to do it again. There's little interactivity besides, "look around". But still...
Another fun level is while you're crawling around in the sewers of the Strogg fortress. Imagine Condemned: Criminal Origins, mixed with Shaun Of The Dead, mixed with Halo. There are zombies that appear out of nowhere...with guns. It's actually scary. The atmosphere makes strange noises and barrels move around. Zombies rise out of little pools of goo, and out of pipes. I was creeped out. The atmosphere is kind of ruined by the occasional radio contact from other marines trapped in the sewer thing as well. Saying stuff like "OW! Damn thing bit me" and "There's freaken ZOMBIES down here maaan" Shit like that.
This was my first review of a game and I hope I didn't fuck it up too much.
Thanks, T.A.I.A
