Having been bought up on the first 2 quake games, i was interested to find quake 4 in my brothers CD wallet. I have heard good and bad things about this game and wanted to try it for myself, and heres how i found it.

Story: Quake 2 all over again, nasty looking aliens over there, heres a gun, go shoot.
You can easily play this game without paying the slightest attention to the story which simply another battle for the human races survival. The story only serves as an excuse for the games events, no more.

Gameplay: As this is an FPS theres not a lot to be explained here. This game is mostly based indoors on tight rails. There are nook and crannies that you need to look for to find extra supplies but thats as far as it goes. The combat is satisfying and meaty and has one or two deviations from the standard FPS. The most noticeable of these being the flash light system. The flashlight is actually attached to your weapon and can only be mounted on your blaster and machine gun, so when exploring dark areas you have a choice between able to see your enemy but having weaker weapons or not being able to spot them so easily but being able to take them down quickly when you do. It may not sound important but this kind of thinking dominates the entire game. Weapons are fairly standard but still great fun to use.
Fellow marines are present thoughtout the enitre game, and when they are not being bumped off in cut scenes, their A.I is solid and they provide a resassuring and helpful presence.
There are few needless vechicle sections but they are not overly long or tiresome.
The enemy are well rounded and can hit you wiht all kind of attacks and you are never overwhelmed by one type for extended periods of time, breaking up the combat nicely and keeping you on your toes.

Graphics: This game looks good considering its age, and the lighing atmospheric. The flashlight beams deserve a special mention too, adding greatly to the somtimes tense nature of the game.
You will start to tire of the same corridors after a while but the great combat makes up for it. The character models are excellent, with the strogg being especially detailed and well made.

Quake 4 is perfect for those looking for a solid traditional fps, and other than its genericness its hard to criticise.
