Yes, DOOM's younger sibling has finally come out of its teenage years...though it's still angsty as all get out.

Not gonna lie, I was never a huge fan of the series, but I respect the indelible mark it left on the industry. It popularized many staples of multiplayer shooters, including rocket jumping and bunny hopping. Its engine laid the framework for a dizzying array of games, [http://i54.tinypic.com/veytro.png] many of which went on to form their own iconic franchises. Finally, I owe Quake and its community a debt of gratitude for a little mod called "Team Fortress..."
If it weren't for Quake I would have never known the joy of playing Team Fortress 2, which (despite my complaints about the direction it's taken in recent years) is still my favorite multiplayer game bar none.

So cheers on entering your second decade, Quake. You have much to be proud of.

Has it really been that long already? Anyway, thank you, Quake, for what you meant for the fps genre and the industry as a whole.

So, this seems like a good opportunity to post this video:
It's a good watch for anyone interested in the history of the first person shooter genre and will give a pretty good understanding of how significant Quake was/is to anyone who doesn't see what the big deal is. RetroAhoy also did similar videos on Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Also worth a look.

Welp, guess I'll be doing some good ol' fashioned fragging in celebration tonight then.

I wholeheartedly agree. Team Fortress has been my favorite multiplayer fps experience ever since the original mod. Many thousands of hours spread across almost two decades.

I considered leading off with it (big fan of the RetroAhoy series), but I figured the LGR one was good for a "bite-sized" overview. I'll second that recommendation, though; you won't find a better video if you want an in-depth history and analysis of the game.

Huh, you'd think with the announcement of a new Quake game there'd be some interest in talking about the title that started the series.

Then again, Quake is probably in that really awkward position of being both highly influential and a somewhat forgotten game due to being overshadowed by older cousin Doom and younger sibling Quake III Arena.

Anyway, an update on that on that celebratory fragging. Had to settle for some Q3A, since I couldn't find any Q1 servers with players. Did turn out to be more 'getting fragged' than fragging tho, possibly because some dozen years of not playing any Quake DM may have atrophied my skills a little. no biggie, good times were still had.
