so i was drinking my sunny d in my car this morning while carpooling with my friend to school this morning (gas is expensive, and being a broke college student makes it worse) when he tells me that obama says that kids need to be in school longer with less vacation. when the hell did quantity equal quality? bad enough i see my younger cousins freaking out cause they have too much homework to deal with that they end up workin on it from 4 pm to 1 am, not that its too hard its just too much, now this guy says kids need to be in school longer? Whatever happened to decent teachers and actually teaching the kids somethin, not just having them memorize something they'll just brain dump after the test is over? And one other thing, if he says our education system sucks so bad, what does that make his education seem like? Suck on that one! But seriously anyone else besides me bothered by this, or am i just ranting on a soapbox in a speakers corner?

If you're in school longer then there's more school hours and thus less homework. You also have more time to understand things fully and check stuff out with a teacher.

And seriously? Your cousins are doing homework for 9 hours?
I'm calling Bullshit.

I think we had this topic up yesterday about making school days longer.
But yeah I do think the the teachers should just be more qualified most kids do bad because of being at the stage where they're to lazy to do much homework in the first place. Much less doing it longer

I've done homework for nine hours before...

A lot of it involved surfing the internet because I was bored, I got annoyed that homework was taking so long, so I surfed the internet to relieve my frustration.

Needless to say, I'm not great at doing homework.

My english teacher doesn't seem to agree.
We get huge essays to do overnight and with me his comment is usually "it's very well written but I'm graded down because I didn't write enough".

In a way it makes sense. If the little kiddies are at home doing homework they've got distractions to stop them from doing work.

But in the long term if school days are longer people are gonna be tired, grouchy and no work will get done at home cos they'll be coming in, dinner and then bed.

Or they'll lose concentration at school.

He's the president, your argument is invalid.

But really, that's just crazy bull crap. Because the kids are so annoyed from being in school so long, they'll just get lazy and not do anything like they usually do.

To be honest, I'd rather see less time in school and less homework, and more quality education. Studies have shown that plenty of homework is actually a detriment to children. And as for quality education, I'd prefer that failing students be assigned public tutors, and that the standard of what is being teached is raised across the nation.

Prolonged exposure to an encouraging academic environment is never a bad thing. I find that the people who choose to spend their time in academia tend to make better decisions and remain informed more so than someone that chooses not to. The only problem is, you can't force kids to spend more time on academics if they truly don't want to do so.

Wow, that sounded embarrassingly elitist, but alas it is true.

Yea im gonna go with this. Also try reading up on things before you go around bitching in public places, someone is bound to call you on things.
No it really happens. I did six to nine hours of HW once a week back in High School.

Well I always retained information quite well, so homework normally only took me 20 minutes to an hour to complete. But it is true, going to school longer just burns you out. Say you have an hour long lecture, I mean straight lecture(college I had 3 hour long lectures, ended up playing on my laptop after the first hour and still aced the tests)it is said that only the first 20 minutes of that will be absorbed, and the last ten minutes will be absorbed. That leaves half the time where nothing is being done.

Now if American schools were like academies where the students lived on campus, I can see having longer school days would work. You can have more and longer breaks between classes, giving the kids time to cool down after a brain workout.

The one thing that screws kids up these days is being helped too often I believe. There was always 1-5 kids near the back of the class who needed the teacher to do everything for them, this slowed the pace of the whole class down. It wasn't that they were slow or stupid, it's that society has taught them that they can always get someone else to do something for them, and that's why we do not cover as much material as we should.

I had a physics class once, where we were supposed to cover the whole book( 10 chapters) in 18 weeks. The first two weeks we covered a chapter a week, being just simple measurement review and such. But once we got through the common knowledge base(should be common by now, we were seniors) we ended up slowing waaay down for idiots who wanted the teacher to tell them how to do something every time. We ended up barely entering chapter six before it was time to graduate. I took the book, sat down and read the thing myself so I may at least learn something from the damn course.

So yes, how US schools are designed, longer days will be bad, the problem is not the time allowed, but how it's used. I blame it on society, which is getting lazier and lazier.

And that was a bad thing how? You seem fine to me, cept for your rampant procrastination on the internet.
Never said it was a bad thing. Although I think it may have contributed to my rampant procrastination.

You're right, Quality does not equal Quantity.

But I'm sure the reason why he would want to cut down on holidays is because the summer break is so long the kids forget stuff, and that makes it very inconvenient as it has to be re-taught again and again.

Six to nine hours of homework? Lol, I did nothing like that when I did my A Levels let alone at school.

I find it unlikely your cousins are forced to do homework for more than 2 hours a day (which is a lot IMO). I agree school should be about teaching well instead of spending all your time there. I prefer skill in a game over spending all my time in one game.

I have met a lot of sucky teachers over my years, and I believe that finding better ways to teach is probably a better step than getting kids to go to school longer.

Judging by your inability to spell, punctuate, utilise proper syntax, paragraph or indeed employ the English language with even a modicum of accuracy, I can only say you fucking well need it.

I agree that longer school hours won't have nearly as good an effect as massive increases in education funding, but that doesn't stop most of the arguments in the OP from being utterly retarded.

What does that say about Obama's education? Well, the dude graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, and he was a professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago for 12 years, so I'd say he's pretty well educated.

You drank Sunny D on purpose?

OP: If people don't go to school more often they miss lessons, simple as that. 'Quality over quantity' Doesn't really apply here.

How right you are. I hear that only the first 10-20 mins of revision/homework actually get stored in your brain.
Then you take a five minute break, then start again. They cycle continues.
