Education is the silver bullet. Education is everything. We don't need little changes. We need gigantic revolutionary changes. . . . Competition for the best teachers should be fierce. They should be getting six-figure salaries. Schools should be incredibly expensive for government and absolutely free of charge for its citizens, just like national defense.
Idealistic, like the rest of the show, but it still incapsulates my view on education pretty well.

i agree with the op, in britan the public school system is a load of bullshit designed to shit out sub-standerd childeren with a poor education, i'm one of the lucky ones cause i got into a grammer school and we have way to much homework. plus alot of chools want more, our deputy head told us the results of a survey sent round about his kids school one assembly, and apparently only two people said they set to much. and in his words: "me and my wife know who they are,"

but then again if education was meantto let you acheive your potential then schools would be differant,

Judging by your grammar, spelling, and sentence structure, you could have used a little extra time in school.

What he is likely considering, is turning the school year into something similar to that of Japan or Australia: School throughout the year, but with more shorter breaks, instead of few long ones.

I find it unlikely your cousins are forced to do homework for more than 2 hours a day (which is a lot IMO). I agree school should be about teaching well instead of spending all your time there. I prefer skill in a game over spending all my time in one game.

I have met a lot of sucky teachers over my years, and I believe that finding better ways to teach is probably a better step than getting kids to go to school longer.

I can't speak for the states but 90-100 hour weeks with time spent in school and doing homework isn't what I would call "uncommon" for me. Depends on teachers though some what though. I'm unlucky enough to have a math teacher who just loves the idea of teaching by rote and English teacher who has decided that we would benefit from copying a 4000 page dictionary by the end of term on the usual homework which is on top of the classwork.

How right you are. I hear that only the first 10-20 mins of revision/homework actually get stored in your brain.
Hmm... I've heard its the first 20 mins and the last 20 mins, basically you forget the middle part entirely xD Good times...

so i was drinking my sunny d in my car this morning while carpooling with my friend to school this morning (gas is expensive, and being a broke college student makes it worse) when he tells me that obama says that kids need to be in school longer with less vacation. when the hell did quantity equal quality? bad enough i see my younger cousins freaking out cause they have too much homework to deal with that they end up workin on it from 4 pm to 1 am, not that its too hard its just too much, now this guy says kids need to be in school longer? Whatever happened to decent teachers and actually teaching the kids somethin, not just having them memorize something they'll just brain dump after the test is over? And one other thing, if he says our education system sucks so bad, what does that make his education seem like? Suck on that one! But seriously anyone else besides me bothered by this, or am i just ranting on a soapbox in a speakers corner?
Judging by your inability to spell, punctuate, utilise proper syntax, paragraph or indeed employ the English language with even a modicum of accuracy, I can only say you fucking well need it.

Oh lord did that make me laugh! You sir are my win poster for the day, you may drink from my canteen.
I have my own, good fellow, but we may exchange them, and thank you for the handsomely delivered compliment. *Passes hip-flask to xmetatr0nx, takes canteen in return. Swigs*
Bad move buddy. Meta has some... Issues. I am pretty sure you just drank special Kool-Aid.

On Topic: I don't really give a rip, the government is a big heaping pile of inefficient bureaucracy headed by a guy I wouldn't trust to watch my cat over the weekend. At least not as long as his flunkies are around him. Seriously shit stinks, and it does not look like it is going to get better, we are just doomed to repeat the mistakes we have already made before. Sad thing is few people actually recognize what I am talking about as mistakes. Oh hay, maybe Obama will get lucky and everything will fix itself and then he to can take credit for it.

Oh yeah, I don't give a rip because I am long out of school.

Ahhhh, I loved breezing through high school. Maybe it was just my school, but the last four years of my public school life was a fucking joke. My friends and I used to race each other through the standardized test because they were so insultingly easy. I almost felt a little dumber after taking them. The U.S. public school system is doomed and there is no way to stop it.

As for me, I'm learning Japanese.
After that's done, I'm moving to Japan to attend college there.

If you're in school longer then there's more school hours and thus less homework. You also have more time to understand things fully and check stuff out with a teacher.

And seriously? Your cousins are doing homework for 9 hours?
I'm calling Bullshit.
Seconded.

Now, first of all, I think you're over-reacting. I'm an American, too, and I'm doin' homework just like everyone else. However, I think that what Obama is REALLY aiming to say, here, is not that we need to work ourselves like dogs, but that we simply need to have more kids buckle down and really FOCUS on their educations. I know kids who just don't give a shit, and i'm sure you do too, and that's a really poisonous attitude to have. I think that's what Obama's talking about.

Also, I find it a little juvenile that you go from perfectly acceptable indignation and an intelligent argument to a petty "I know you are but what am I"-level argument about the quality of our president's education.

Ooh Ooh, do you know what the really only valuable thing you learn in high school is? Social skills. Those are quite useful in a job. Honestly school is mostly so that adults don't have to deal with kids all day. If we went to school to only learn what was academically necessary (I need to take ceramics [i/]why[/i]?) we'd be out in a few hours, and maybe the classes that actually do help you are taught by shitty teacher who are there due to tenure. So yeah more school is really not going to get you anything.

No politician can fix the school system. You need a teacher to do that. The job requires experience in the field and inside knowledge of what's going on. Politicians don't have that. Unfortunately, the teachers are all to busy teaching to sell their souls and go into politics.

Prolonged exposure to an encouraging academic environment is never a bad thing. I find that the people who choose to spend their time in academia tend to make better decisions and remain informed more so than someone that chooses not to. The only problem is, you can't force kids to spend more time on academics if they truly don't want to do so.

Wow, that sounded embarrassingly elitist, but alas it is true.
School isn't an "encouraging academic environment". It's a demeaning, dreary place where teachers talk to you like your a dog and you are surrounded mostly by people you hate. The only class I every learned anything in was math, where the teacher had some concept of mutual respect, and most people were still to asleep to make noise or annoy me otherwise.

Let's put it this way. When I first started high school they were doing 35min classes...what sort of information can be taught/learnt in 35mins? And how much can teachers teach you in those 35mins? They extended lessons to 1hr periods, keeping regular school hours with a 15min morning recess and a 1hr lunch recess. Less school books to carry to school each day also (no lockers). Homework stayed the same which would roughly take a couple of hours to do (should you actually do it.) Oh, I've also been out of school 7 years now and can honestly say, FUCK I wish I could go back.
