I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit and have FFVII Ultima installed on here. Now, the game works fine and most of the sounds work just fine. But certain sound effects seem to just be simply missing. It's been a very long time since I've played FFVII (hence why I want to play it again), so I'm only assuming sound is actually missing.

For instance, in the beginning of the game your goal is to blow up a MAKO reactor. Fine. I get all the way to the part where there is an explosion and there's just no sound. Nothing. I would assume the designers put some sound in there for the explosion. Sound picks back up again when Cloud meets Aeris then shuts back off again once he's on the train. Again, I would assume they put in the sound of the train, but there's just nothing at all.

I do have the game patched to 1.4 and have "XP Compatibility" and "run as administrator" checked in the shortcuts properties. Anyone have any ideas?

Try running it in Win98 compatibility? Or even Win95?

I'll try it. I have to keep running through the same part over and over so I can see if it's working or not. The patch says the purpose of it is to make it fully XP compatible, so that's why I chose XP compatibility first. I'll try 98 next.
