Okay so i will cut straight to the question:

When minecraft updates, what happens to the worlds you already have. For example i have a world which i created during the last update. Now the new update is out and apparently you can mine emerald to use to trade with villages. Will this world have emeralds in it even though i have already mined quite a bit in the area i started at. Will i have to mine in an area i havent explored yet?

To put the question in another way, does an old world receive all the benifits of an update, or is it better to simply better to make a new world?

P.S Sorry if is this question is worded weirdly, i dont really know how to put it.

Any chunk that was loaded prior to the update is still in "1.2", so you won't find emeralds there, because the chunk is already loaded. If you load new chunks, these will be under 1.3, so you will find emeralds. If you have a smaller map, this shouldn't be an issue, but if it is a larger one, you may want to reset. Any villages that are in the old part of the map will not trade, but if it's a new village, they will.

Actually, villages that are already loaded are affected by the update and will trade, however you are correct about chunks being loaded prior to 1.3 not being updated. So if you've already explored a large area around your house you would probably be better off loading a new world, or moving to a different area of the map and starting over there.

If you want to load a new world though, so that everything will be in 1.3, but you want to keep your old buildings, there's a program called MCedit which will allow you to do it.
