I do want to get this and probably will soon, but does minecraft 'end'? I mean the mining part. I've seen some Youtube videos of titanic craters made, it looked like you could keep going deeper if you wanted to.

There is a layer of "bedrock" that is effectively impenetrable, and if you do get through you just fall into an abyss. The world is large enough, though, that you could mine horizontally pretty much forever.

The bottom of the map is the unbreakable bedrock. You can go through it at some places and weird stuff happens. It doesn't have an endgame, if that's what you're talking about, but Notch says he might put one in.

I hope there is no endgame. It's fun to be able to just build a lot with almost infinite resources. Also with hellmode it will be easier to explore new places of the maps instead of being confined to mostly one island. Also bedrock stops you from falling out of the world, although it doesn't do a good job.

The measured surface of a single "Survival" game in single-player is 8-times the surface of the earth.

So yes. Might take you about 10 years to find the edge, though.

I heard somewhere that the minecraft world can in theory save a surface areas 8 times that of the Earth.

the height of the world from the lowest bedrock to the sky build limit is 128 blocks

bedrock appears between blocks 128 and 124 inclusive

if you want to check out a sweet server got to the escapist minecraft group http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Minecraft-Appreciation-Club

we have tons of stuff to see, the world file is over 400mb and we average 10-15 players sometimes over 30
