Childhood obesity (and obesity generally) is already an epidemic in Britain. America may be the fattest, but most of the Anglosphere is positively Rubenesque compared to Western Europe. The second part is a joke, I thought you Brits were supposed to know humor? Drawing parallels between prison contraband and school contraband. Fairly basic stuff.

A generalisation but probably more true for British people of sarcasm and irony than humour as a whole, and I do know humour... which is why I am fairly certain that wasnt a joke. I see how people find offensive jokes funny or childish jokes funny, but what was said in the second paragraph wasnt funny. I believe you are applying an underlying thought that was not there prior to MY insertion of the relation to the media portrayal of American prisons.

Another Canadian here. From grades 4-6 my school had us sell chocolate bars too. Only the top 3 or so sellers got prizes though.

EDIT: Specifically, we sold these

...every year. Which probably explains why I can't stand them today.

OMG I love those. Just mail em to me I'll take care of them.

Most schools here in the UK stopped selling fizzy drinks and candy bars a few years ago. A TV show called "School Dinners" starring a celebrity chef named Jamie Oliver took an in-depth look into what children eat at school and the facts were quite shocking and caused a bit of an uproar in British media.
But that's the school selling them. Not the students.

OT - British here and we're too classy for that shit. :p

I'm afraid I haven't sold them in years so I don't have any for you. However, I'm fairly confident I can overpower any children that come to my house selling them and steal some, so I might still be able to hook you up.

This is actually going to be illegal next year when Michelle Obama's school lunch/food/fitness thing goes completely into effect. Students will not be allowed to sell food of any kind for fundraisers through the school or on school campus without a proper license.

We got these rad boxes full of candy, and we had to sell them- we didn't get any of the proceeds, but it did make us the most popular people until we ran out of stock.

YOU ACTUALLY JUST ASKED ME IF YOU EVER GET TO DO ANYTHING REMOTELY FUN OR WORTHWHILE IN A GERMAN SCHOOL!
That's just par for the course as far as schools go.

UK man over here, can't recall doing anything like that in school. Which I'm so very, very grateful for.
In fact, I don't really understand why some foreign schools do this. Schools are for learning. Things like selling stuff as a school function seems like a gigantic waste of time for all involved.
Technically you're learning how to make a sale, which is a hell of a lot more important to the real world than anything else they teach you at school. Anything above pre-algebra is a giant waste of time, for instance. "You change is $7.95, Sir. Oh wait, I forgot to input the imaginary numbers. Silly me. Your change is actually $9.18i, have a nice goddamn day." (Yes, I'm bitter)

South African here.
I had to sell them in my earlier years at school in order to raise funds for the school facilities. It mysteriously vanished after a while though and was never replaced with another fund raiser.

Swede here, I've done something similar. Everyone in my class had to sell cookies to get money for a school trip if I remember right. No prizes though.

I think you've got me there. And I never even took algebra.

No, the closest to that I had was collecting canned food for people. Which did happen in a few years of my school life.

France, never had anything like that. The closest was the school party, at the end of the year, where parents brought cakes that they made, game them to the school, and then the school sold slice of them to other parents. You could also donate clothes that other people would buy, etc, the whole thing was for the school to get some money.

But the students weren't required to sell anything, and the parents were the one giving out stuff, not the students (it was in elementary school).
