Off to Uni in September, and I'm wondering, is the internet filtered like it is at school? Because I'd have some serious issues with that...
The Uni is Aberystwyth, but I assume it's the same across the UK.
And I mean on my own computer, linked to the Uni's internet/network.
I'm just about to end my third/final year at Aber and firstly can I just say: EXCELLENT CHOICE!
It may be small, but you will love it! Really, really wish I wasn't going! The social life here is immense so even if you have internet issues (listed below) it shouldn't bother you too much.
And to answer your question:
It varies greatly from uni to uni.
Campus/uni provided Internet is completely unfiltered and almost always of a very high speed.
There is an issue with ports in that if you live in halls, you will need to register your computer's MAC address (you can register up to 2 machines) and then you are allowed to make up to 20 port exceptions in the University Firewall. The system is automated and updated at 8am every morning.
Though I have not tried it myself, I believe you can petition the IT dept to open a wider range for you (ie server ranges for games if the list is 500 ports long etc).
In short, if something is not working at Aber, you need to sort the ports.
2nd and 3rd year students often live in town so then the internet is entirely your business to deal with.
Small world, eh? What are you studying?
