Off to Uni in September, and I'm wondering, is the internet filtered like it is at school? Because I'd have some serious issues with that...

The Uni is Aberystwyth, but I assume it's the same across the UK.

And I mean on my own computer, linked to the Uni's internet/network.

HELLO!

I'm at Aberystwyth at the moment (studying History by the way) and internet in halls is not filtered like it is at schools, you can go wherever you wish on the internet.

It is however rather unstable, in my halls (Cawt Mawr) and I think it's pretty dodgy in other halls too. It tends to cut out every couple of hours, requiring you to reset your connection. It's also a ***** to set up. Took me 2 days.

Good luck, Aber's a good place to be :D

Define "filtered"

My university bans you from the network if you use torrents and as far as I know Steam doesn't work on campus, although I've lived in a house off campus my entire Uni life so these are just things I've heard.

Now, if it's the *naughty sites* that you're on about, no I don't think they're filtered.

I'm just about to end my third/final year at Aber and firstly can I just say: EXCELLENT CHOICE!
It may be small, but you will love it! Really, really wish I wasn't going! The social life here is immense so even if you have internet issues (listed below) it shouldn't bother you too much. :p

And to answer your question:

It varies greatly from uni to uni.

Campus/uni provided Internet is completely unfiltered and almost always of a very high speed.
There is an issue with ports in that if you live in halls, you will need to register your computer's MAC address (you can register up to 2 machines) and then you are allowed to make up to 20 port exceptions in the University Firewall. The system is automated and updated at 8am every morning.

Though I have not tried it myself, I believe you can petition the IT dept to open a wider range for you (ie server ranges for games if the list is 500 ports long etc).

In short, if something is not working at Aber, you need to sort the ports.

2nd and 3rd year students often live in town so then the internet is entirely your business to deal with.

Small world, eh? What are you studying?

[Edit] Noticed the other guy from Aber (really small world!) talking about how his internet in Cawt Mawr is a bit dodgey; its fine in PJM (Pentre Jane Morgan), no issues at all.

Cheers :D I'm guaranteed to go there, did a scholarship thing and got an unconditional :)

Doing History aswell actually ^_^

Good news about the internet, as long as it works reasonably I should be alright...I'm staying in Trefloyne if that affects anything.

Small world indeed...
I'll be studying good ol' History :)
And I completely forgot I'll only have to worry about campus internet for the first year, I can live with that.

Ahh great stuff, the History department is good, and as the person above me said, the social life is fantastic for such a small town. So many pubs!

Playing games online will need you to request ports to be opened, but it's not a big deal. In fact you'll probably spend a hell of a lot less time gaming once you settle in :)

Aber's a good choice, nice one :D. I'm at Leeds, but Aber was my insurance choice.

Anyhow, here in Leeds you get your connection revoked if you even have anything like Limewire installed on your PC, regardless of whether or not you even use it. Porn isn't regulated, surprisingly, and I was able to access sex sites today even on campus on my laptop (before anyone asks, it was popups, I had to get rid of a ton of viruses and stuff after having my laptop out of commission for three weeks).

As for Aberystwyth, I have no idea but I guess it's probably somewhat similar. It'll be pretty lenient, especially in halls of residence, but there's bound to be some filters in place. as the first poster suggested, since each university has different rules, you should probably check with the uni first.

:O

I know another person on here from Aber too, his name is Hayden I think. Four of us! Should start a user group or something :p

Yeah Cawt Mawr network can be pretty annoying, but it's good to know that other halls dont have our problem.

Only 2 more weeks to put up with it, then we're into a proper house downtown next year :D
