I recently bought an ASUS laptop and it keeps asking me to register the product. It claims I have to register my laptop within 30 days of purchase to get the warranty, but it's asking me for all sorts of personal information that I don't want to provide. I paid for the warranty when I bought the thing. Do they actually have a right to refuse to repair it if I don't register?

Quite possibly they can, because it's a third party warranty (ie with asus, not directly with the place you bought it from). If they didn't put the 30 day limit, how would they be able to tell if it was still within the warranty period?

What aren't you happy with them having? I mean, they'd need your name, phone (or email if they do ticket based tech support), and address if ever you did need to get it repaired anyway.

I can't really think what, but if there's any stuff you really don't want them having just fill it in with n/a or something. But bear in mind that it might bite you in the arse later if they can't get in touch with you or verify your warranty because you didn't give them enough info to do so.

ASUS have an extended warranty which you must register in order to benefit from. Not only does it last longer, but it is also international, meaning more will be covered, rather than the standard 'we have to give you this' warranty. Given that it is free, and ASUS don't do anything with the data they receive, I would take the offer as it goes.

(Above is based on my experience as a technician until 2009 and could be slightly different now)

All ASUS is doing is building a profile of their customer base to better target ASUS's products. If they pass data on at all, it will be anonymised and not traceable back to you. It's a simple quid pro quo, you tell them about yourself and they give you a free improved warranty.

Okay, perhaps I'm just being paranoid about sharing my information then. Although to be fair, the way they would know it is within my warranty period is that I keep my receipts. Thanks for the reassurance everyone.
