Have you ever just joined a random website out of the blue just for the heck of it? Like, you just joined it for no reason at all, began posting, trying to integrate yourself into that website's community? I know I'm guilty of doing this when I'm bored during the night... sad to say! But how about any of you?

Nope, not usually. I lurk in 99% of forums[footnote]Even lurking in the R&P forum here[/footnote], usually because I do not like their communities. I have a membership with two forums, The Escapist and Blender Artists.

I lurked here about a year or so? I came here to watch ZP and EC (at the time) and occasionally, I'd see an interesting topic on the 'most popular threads' box and wander in. I started visiting enough that I started recognizing users by their names and avatars, and then I joined! The Escapist has been a brighter place ever since.

I tend to mainly lurk on most forums I visit, including this place. I only really actively post and involve myself in the community on 2 sites. And one of those is a stretch nowadays.

Yep. It's called the Escapist. I don't fit in here at all yet I continue to post and I've nearly made it to 1000 posts. Well, to be honest I signed up for these forums because my usual forum is blocked at work and I usually post from there. Otherwise I just come for the videos like Yahtzee/MovieBob/Jimquisition at home.

Not really, I usually joined a website forum with a purpose in mind e.g. I joined this Phantasy Star Online website to intend to find some people to co op online and this Guild Wars fansite because they were holding a competition.
Before you asked about this website, I joined because I wanted to since the forum look like it's fun to post.

I very, very, very rarely join communities.

The only ones I have joined are the Escapist... and YouTube and deviantART if simply uploading content counts.

Sarcasm?

If not, then presumably OP is using downtime to mean relaxation time, when there's nothing better to do.

Absolutely not. I'm far too apathetic and unmotivated to become involved in communities I actually care about, so joining random ones just for the hell of it is certainly not something I'd do.

I only really post here and one other forum, which is limited to around 20/30 posters. And if I'm honest, I only really post here when I'm bored at work.

no sarcasm. i understand internet donwtime as "internet doesnt work", "internet is down" and thus never woudl associate it with random registering.
in which case, what relaxation time? there is time to relax on the internet?

Let me reiterate: When you have nothing else better to do, do you sometimes join random websites for the heck of it? Say this place isn't having a decent amount of activity lately, would you go off into the web and find another one to provide yourself with a little entertainment? Not to say you'd leave this place forever, that's hardly what I'm suggesting.

I'm using the term "downtime" as nothing better to do, not that the Internet is failing to work or whatever.

No but my neighbours are probably sick of my cranking The Pogues up to full and singing along when I've had too much to drink

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/downtime

1. commerce - Compare idle time time during which a machine or plant is not working because it is incapable of production, as when under repair: the term is sometimes used to include all nonproductive time

2. informal - time spent not working; spare time

Only when I was 12 and wanted to talk on newgrounds (ah, memories). Nowadays if I join a community to post on something its because someone is being a dick and I want to call them out on it.

Oh, then there is somethingawful, which I joined because goons have the best forums. Get all of my motivation, work out and nutrition information there.

Edit: Apparently one of my first posts here was "MADD have always been screwed". That's the entire post. I feel ashamed.

Slogging through the mountains of skeletons and hiding under their fragmented bones from trolls on Youtube made this place look like Eden. Like an oasis in the desert, or in this case, Civilisation in the wilderness of the internet.

there is no free time on the internet. its all about juggling priorities. i have no time for new random websites. in fact i avoid registration if possible. i have way too many accounts as it is. this site was worth it however, the best gaming-oriented site out there.
