so despite this account being made in 2014, i'm still pretty new to the Escapist forums as i've only made like 1 thread on these forums before. since 2007 i have been spending the majority of my internet forum time posting on Gametrailers.com forums.

i'm just wondering how different is posting on the escapist forums to GT? just wondering if rules and mods here are stricter than GT mods?

(in other words, i don't want to F*** up my reputation here if i post something that was acceptable on GT forums that isn't acceptable on escapist forums like casual swearing for example)

Uh, casual swearing is allowed here. So you don't need to censor out the word "fuck" for example.

As for the rest, I guess this mostly explains it all:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/codeofconduct

But just out of interest, how do the above rules compare with GT's? I didn't get a chance to read them before the site went down.

Eh, just be careful about the opinions you post around here. There's certainly no censorship as long as you're not being an asshole about getting your point across, but generally speaking this site is full of progressive-minded people who will be more than happy to tell you exactly how wrong you are in the same way as the other 10 people before them explained exactly how wrong you are.

So yeah, generally speaking if you post anything that's not politically correct you should be prepared to have your inbox flooded. :p

You may not care about how you conduct yourself on the site, but that's no excuse to jump on someone who's asking questions because they do.

OT: When in doubt, ask away. You can find a list of mods at the bottom of the Code of Conduct and send a PM to any one of them (or the Community Manager) to ask whether what you're thinking of doing is going to go against the rules. Hopefully you'll find that this place is fairly familiar to someone migrating over from GT; you'll likely recognize at least a couple of faces.

To the OP, welcome to the Escapist!

The biggest rule this message board has is not to insult other posters. That is by far the most carefully enforced rule on the site. You can argue to your heart's content but the moment it turns against the poster you are setting yourself up for a warning.

It's actually a pretty nice environment for it. While some posters get away with it by being subtle with their insults, overall it's enforced across the board and we are better for it. The mods are very strict with this rule but it's fair.

You also have a "health" meter where you get plenty of warnings before suspensions and bans kick in if you make minor offenses. I mean, major offenses can still get you banned but those would be banned anywhere. Honestly, even if you get banned you can still reach out to the moderators and make your case even for just basic forgiveness and they're willing to listen. That's something different from other places I've visited and it's nice to see so many opportunities for redemption.

Poster breaks (somewhat breaks) a rule while advising new poster to read the rules. Classic.

Certainly gives a rather warm welcome, doesn't it?

I too welcome this new user into our forums. Don't commit post seppuku (Meaning, don't get yourself banned). Don't go into the basement. That about covers it! Enjoy~

Don't be rude is really the big one.

I mean you can be smug and passive aggressive as hell, just don't be rude about it.

Welcome to The Escapist. We have free beer in the basement and I'm totally not trying to lure you down there for despicable purposes involving lemons, nope.

Making an assumption because it's been forever since I've even seen the GT forums, but I'd say Escapist mods are actually less strict, but strike harder in certain areas.

Oh we fucking totally allow all the motherfucking swearing. Just don't make your post about... 60% of fucks and you're good.

Post by the Golden Rule and you're kosher.

This in a nutshell. You can be an asshole, just don't be a dick. Of course it's preferable to not be either but a certain degree of assholery is natural.

I just want to mention that I'm loving how people are explaining this.

Like, "You can be a total jerk wad but you can't be a total twat". haha.

I think it needs to be clear that you can be angry or arrogant but you can't be overtly rude or inflammatory.

Welcome to the Escapist forum! If it makes you feel any better, I'm kind of new here, too!

The easiest way not to get in trouble is just show people respect. Don't insult them, don't try to stir up trouble with questionable replies to sensitive topics, etc... aka. Don't be a Jerk. :)

As long as you're respectful to others, you'll get along just fine around here. It, sort of, seems to work with me.

The main difference between the two is that the Escapist forums are on a site that's still active....

too soon?

Okay, seriously, one thing I'd mention is that people can get pretty political, even when in off-topic (and even gaming) portions of the website, so I'd try to gauge most sections of the forums and the regular members so you can get a feel for where you'd like to be posting most.

Hey welcome to the forum, or welcome back as it were.
A few rules that seem to catch people are; don't call people trolls (or any insults really, you can insult places, things, and ideas but not individual people), watch out for the necro rule (pretty much if it's an older topic that you'd like to comment on create a new thread), and don't admit or incourage the use of Adblock (just shy away from the subject to be safe).
Otherwise it's you're standard TOS, if anything it's less restrictive then normal.

Oh and as far as reputation, well thought out posts that aren't insanely long are good starts, and a novel interesting avatar is helpful for people to remember you by.

i'm first and foremost a Nintendo Fanboy. i love playing Nintendo games. i also play Xbox although i hardly ever touch my Xbox One (mainly because it hardly has any good exclusives when the 360 had heaps), i don't hate Sony however i did hate the Sony Fanboys on GT (that forum was filled with Sony fanboys) and i hate most of the Third Parties and their multilatform games (or Turd Parties as i like to call them. EA and Ubisoft i especially dislike)

that's pretty much my stance on videogames anyway lol.

GamerGate was basically the Somme here. We lost hundreds on both sides every day. MovieBob and Jim Sterling reaped a terrible toll when they left too.
And lots of people just got too many warnings for personal insults, calling other members t rolls or shitposting threads without any real topic, just a declarative statement meant to insult or cause butthurt.

Sad when that happens, I was a regular on the 2p Start forums until they shut down. It was great on there.

But welcome! Glad to have you here, it is a good place usually. Try not to be an ass and things will usually be fine, the mods are pretty lenient. People can get a little snappy, but generally they let grudges die with the thread. Which is nice, I have been on communities where everything you ever say will never be forgotten. On here you have to be constantly annoying for a long time or really fuck up hard for people to hold it against you long term.

There is not a lot of fan rivalry here these days, we are all pretty multi platform gamers from what I have seen. Or if there is I am not seeing it. When it does happen the big camps are PC gamers vs consoles in general, though the rivalry is pretty mild even then.

I'm a PC gal myself, though I would say I am a Nintendo fangirl as a close second.

Yeah, the escapist kinda arrived to it's current chill state by everyone bad self destructing. It was pretty bad on here for a while.

Sorry, that came off a lot harsher than I intended.

Though I wonder why mods have been replying to my posts lately. Should I worry about that?
Either you've been marked for execution by the king of the sub-basement, or there's a "kick me" sign on your back.

Honestly, it's mostly just exercising common sense and some basic human dignity around here. Don't name call or hurl insults at people, don't abuse the flagging system, don't advocate the use of piracy or adblockers (even if a certain former Escapist contributor drums up an official discussion of the topic where you totally won't get in trouble, guis [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/6.843934-Jimquisition-The-Adblock-Episode]), don't post spam or self-advertisements, use "
" tags for image/video galleries, keep said images/videos in the "G" to "PG-13" range (aka no gore/porn) and try to make your posts longer than one sentence (though that last one doesn't really seem to be enforced anymore). I've adhered to the above for nearly eight years now, and I have yet to receive a single warning.

Sounds more like the Second Battle of Ypres, what with the poison gassing and all.
How about Passchendaele? Seems like an apt comparison, what with the rivers of muck that swallowed men whole and the general sense of frustration and despair.

"I am scared...Verdun, the Somme and Arras are mere purgatories compared to this concentrated hell, which one of these days will be stoked up to white heat. It makes you grind your teeth with rage and gives you a dry feeling in your throat. I have a sense of coming disaster."
-German officer, Passchendaele

Welcome to our quiet beach community. The bar is over there.

People have different feelings about the moderation here, I find it pretty easy to get along. Just don't call people names passively or aggressively, and you won't bump your head on the rules. I've never got a moderation on accident, I'll put it that way.

The forums have a weird reputation online. I've seen GamerGate call us a shitty place, I've seen SJWs call us subhuman scum.

Oh and stay out of the basement.
