How often have you ever tried starting a topic? How often have the responses to the topic been less than thirty? Less than twenty? Hardly even looked at? I've started so many topics that end up that way.

So my question to you is how many topics have you started with few responses? What are some of those topics you started that failed to get attention?

For my answer, I assume this will be one of them. But my latest post was a hypothetical time travel question that only got about 12 responses (estimating). how about yourselves?

I used to post much more frequently, but when I was at the peak of my posting, I never made a thread.
I'm much better at answering questions than I am at asking them.

I don't like posting threads, it makes me feel self conscious. I've only started 1 thread - about Recettear - and I think it got about 15 responses? I just feel like proposing a topic for conversation feels too much like attention seeking, so I avoid it.

Number one; intersting topic. We don't want to discuss Orange Juice (those paying attention the last half hour will know what I mean...).

Number two; don't expect replies. We reply if we want to. If you tell us to REPLY YOU SMELLY SOCKS, we will, just because we want to defend our reputation as non-smelly socks...

Number three; fish.

I rarely start topics, but the ones I've started recently have done pretty well, the best with 10 pages. Although I used to make threads that would only go on for 2 or 3 pages at best.

I've made a few topics. Many don't make it past the first page. One made it 4 pages.

I'd rather answer topics from other people than start my own.

What would seem like an interesting, fulfilling and open topic could get very few responses and views, on the contrary from those who seems to be in lack of fantasy or overly used.

I would know. Only made one, with 25 responses to it. *Coffs*

At now, I don't make topics - I flourish them.

I've started around 5 topics.

They never seem to get much attention, so I wait for a really good idea before doing it anymore.

I'm not milking your post to make the poor guy have more posts in his thread!

*ahem*

2-3 pages is my limit. I won't even pay attention to a thread that has gotten beyond as I like to know what I'm replying to, also reading all previous posts. The best way to get high post count is put in a no-brainier, one with short answers that no one want's to read like "whats your favorite hat". No one will read others posts, no one will complain about others posts, no one will write long and complicated posts, just throw out there some random replies that means nothing.

If you have some sense you'll post clever and interesting topics that require discussion on an intellectual level, but that wont get you far as achievements and badges go...

"The largest thread I got going was about 10 pages but that was a simply "Favourite Bands" list thread. Pretty much backs up Suki point about having a no-brainer topic." - Jaranja.

I usually start a thread every once in a while. I know it's less than 10. They average about 100 responses each, give or take 30 or so

I'm not so big on the starting of threads. They tend to die out on the first page or so...
One or two generate enough interest to hit a second page, and I think I may have made one that made a third page, but most of them... meh. I just ask whatever odd question is on my mind at the time, and see if anyone answers.

I think the thing to remember with topics is to not take them personally. There are SO many factors affecting whether a person will reply to the posted topic or not. There are hundreds, literally, of threads being started everyday, and then there is the community, you know, who is on the site, and whether there's already a bunch of interesting things happening (tried posting something on a ZP special day? Yeah, good luck with getting noticed) etc, etc, etc...

I have made two threads, I think. Both of which got a few considered responses, which I valued. They were well thought out and well written (I think) threads, and the act of typing my thoughts down was as good for me as the responses I got.

I might make another thread in the future, but only if something really grabs my attention and I want to share. This does not happen often.

I've only started like 4-5 and didn't get many responses. Some didn't even make double digits

He's made 15 now, cause I'm sooo kind, risking probation and everything to boost his count!

What also works, is making a thread about something really REALLY random... Like so random that it makes people want to post. I have made a series of threads where I asked people a lot of random questions that did have a connection with each other and adding them to a "survey" which was obviously just for shits and giggles. This is fun for everyone and WILL give you post counts trough the roof, but think about it carefully first and find something really cool to go on about.

Well, I've started a few threads. Not sure how many though. They usually last 1 or 2 pages before dying. Sometimes 3 if I'm lucky. My most successful one to date was 6 pages long with like 200 replies. Felt alright.
