I haven't played any of those... Those who have, which do you recommend and why?
Xenogears; it's made by the late great Squaresoft. I think of Xenogears as one of the last great JRPGs to come out of japan before Squaresoft merged with Enix. It follows a mysterious youth named Fei, and his journey of self discovery. Meanwhile, there are giant robots (mechs; "Gears") integrated into the story. Memorable characters, fantastic characters, and a plot so contriversial, it almost didn't make it stateside. It surrounds a lot of religious symbology that resembles much of todays church system.
It was also one of those games that tried to bring a real time aspect to the tried and true turn based combat system most older jrpgs were known for. Each character was special, in how they fought, but you'd string together martial arts combos.
Xenosaga, I believe, is the spiritual successor of Xenogears. I loathed the first game of Xenosaga, though I did beat it. I did not invest in the games that followed. It was not as good as Xenogears- a game that I STILL go back and play every now and again!
